BLAIR (With Gerry Blair Pinch-Hitting) The new OHA Senior "A" league is now officially ready to operate, and as a five-team group. At the meeting held in Toronto last Friday night, Cornwall manager Ray Miron asked for a suspension of operations for one year, which was readily granted. The player personnel was then distributed through the draft to the remaining five clubs, Kitchener-Waterloo, Windsor, Chatham, Belleville and Whitby. Windsor by virtue of their low standing last year were given first choice, and they immediately chose Denis Boucher, who played in the world tournament with the Belleville McFarlands on loan from Cornwall. Chatham selected Marcel Goy~ ette, Aggie Kukulowitz and Reg Grigg. Kitchener pick- ed Ron Muir, who for our money was their best per- former last year, He wore number fourteen in case you are wondering who he was, Kitchener also chose Guy Henri and Don Labelle. Whitby Dunlops selected Ted Syzdlowski who was loaned to North Bay late last year and Gord Huughton, a former junior with Toronto Marlboros and Guelph Biltmores. Belleville decided not to choose any as reports out of Belleville are that Ike Hildebrand and company have their eyes on some new talent for next year to replace some of their old pros, Also on the agenda was the drawing up of the schedule which they concluded would be a B56-game affair starting October 23rd and ending February 28th with play-offs to follow early in March The league will be convened by two men, Lorne Cook of Kingston and Lloyd Pollock of Windsor with Cook having the job of handling the league pool, which always proves to be a tough chore (just ask Kingston). The league also decided that any club seeking admission must have a 75 per cent majority before they will be accepted, What with Kingston having their backs to the wall regarding the Eastern Professional League, it would make it difficult for them to enter this league, as Whitby and Belleville hold 40 per cent of the voting. The. scheduling may prove somewhat difficult seeing as how two of the clubs may be away for sometime, Kitchener will be representing Canada at Squaw Val- ley and wqrd was received recently that the Whitby Dunlops have been accepted to tour Europe in mid- November. Russian officials have asked Bunny Ahearne, International Ice Hockey president to make arrange- ments for the Dunnies to visit Moscow for a couple games while on their tour, After the tour has been fin- alized, manager Wren Blair will then study the team's position of whether or not they can make the trip. These two clubs will likely cram their games in order to make the trips proposed. The initial meeting of the Eastern Professional Hockey league was held in Kingston last week and the hosts kind of threw a stumbling block into the paths of the organizers of the group, when they asked for an ex- tension of time in making their final decision regarding entering the league. Apparently suitable arrangements can not be made with the arena commission in Kingston The hockey club offered them a flat sum of $20,000 plus all program and consession rights as well «s radio and television? rights. To make matters worse, Kenny Reardon, vice-president for the Montreal 'Canadians and a leading factor in this new league stated flatly that there would be no league pool, and in Kingston's positition they would definately need reimbursement of some kind, While Kingston are making up their minds the league has again approached Bob Martineau, busi~ ness manager for the Quebec Aces to reconsider their decision of entering. According to Martineau, he is not satisfied with having one NHL club handling the majority of clubs in the league, so their being in is very doubtful. Montreal would be over the Royals, Hull- Ottawa and probobly Kingston if they were in, Sault Ste, Marie have been coaxed into the league after hav- ing stated that they would be unable to operate due. to cial difficulties, Also present at the meeting were owners of the National Hockey League clubs, and said they definitely would give no financial help to the teams, only player help, All the teams who have entered posted a $5,000 bond signifying their intentions. Next meeting is scheduled for Sudbury on August Sth when again all NHL clubs will be in attendance, TOWN 'D COUNTRY Whitby Millers held the league-leading Brampton Excelsiors to a one-goal lead for the first 50 minutes of their scheduled game here last Thursday night. Then the roof fell in and Brampton pumped home seven goals without an ane swer and won it 14-6, The Millers tried desperately to hang on but just could not stay with the Minto Cup Champions, Next home action is the coming Wednes- day night, game time has been set for 9:00 p.m. Note the change in nights, from Thursday to Wednesday. This to our knowledge is the final home game of the season excepting play-off possibilities, so come out and give these game juniors some read support . . . .. Brooklin Meadowcrests of the OLA Intermediate Leagu had a perfect week-end, winning both of their contests. Friday night in Brantford they defeated the Indians, in a close one 12-11, then on Saturday night back in Brooklin they whipped Acton 15-5. Feature of Saturday vights game was the performance of Terry Davis, of the Whithy Milier Juniors who scored 6 goals, Coach of the Millers, Jim Cherry also had a good night firing home four, Visitors on Thursday night for the Meadow- crests will be Huntsville It would be our guess that International league president Frank Shaughnessy would be trying to obtain a new entry to take the place of the trigger-happy Cubans.
