10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, October 5, 1959 SPORTS MENU Duplate Wins Out By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' Oshawa Duplate captured the Ontario Amateur Softball Asso- ciation's 1959 'Industrial Inter- mediate" championship on Satur- WEEK-END CAPSULES--Oshawa's reputation as a red-hot softball centre was greatly enhanced this past week-end, when three of four teams engaged in Ontario championship quests, came up with important victories ... DUPLATE captured the OASA "Industrial" Ontario championship Saturday, with a thrilling 5-4 win over Sarnia Polymer, in their 3rd game at Simcoe, Jack Mc- Conkey's fine pitching, after Sarnia had taken a 4-0 lead and Gardian's two-run homer in the 8th to put Duplate ahead, were the highlights of Oshawa's first OASA "In- dustrial" title , . . SCUGOG CLEANERS Juveniles el- iminated Galt 6-2 in their third game, at Burlington. The Oshawa lads lead 1-0 until the 7th, trailed 2-1 going into the 9th and put on a sensational six-hit attack, including a three-run homer by Mapes, for a five-run rally. Now the local Juveniles meet Timmins here in the All-Ontario Juvenile "A" finals this week-end and are expected to bring another OASA title to the city . . . SUNNYSIDE PARK Midgets can do the same thing. They'll meet New Liskeard here this week-end in the OASA Midget title round. Sunnyside had to go 15 innings to beat out a classy team of youngsters from Point Ed- ward, here Saturday afternoon. The winning run was scored on a freakish play--the batter missed the third strike--so did the catcher--the batter started for the bench, then ran to 1st base and beat the baseman to the bag--while the winning run was coming home from 3rd base . . . DIDN'T HEAR how the Frenchman's Bay Pee Wee boys made out against Aldershot on Saturday nor what happened at Brooklin, between Mount Zion and Selkirk . . , UAW DEL'S were unable to make it a clean sweep for Oshawa softball teams on Saturday. They came up with an "off day" on the worst day, losing 17-0 to Florence "Chicks" at Stratford, in the third game for the PWSU Inter. "A" crown, OSHAWA LEGION had two representatives engaged in OBA minor baseball championship action on Saturday afternoon and here again, the Motor City lads were not so fortunate. Here at home, Legion Juniors took a good licking from a hard-hitting Hamilton team, in the first game of the Junior "A" finals, They go back to Hamilton on Saturday ... UP IN CHATHAM, the Oshawa UAW Local 222 Juveniles were defeated 3-1 but they hope to even up this OBA series in the return game here Satur- day, The Oshawa lads outhit Chatham by four-to-three but they also out-errored them by five-to-four and this plus a couple of walks, cost Local 222 the decision , OSHAWA MINOR Softball Assoc. LANCASTER Trophy soccer playoffs Saturday night saw Hollandia eliminate the Old Country Club eleven when Peterborough UEW again pulled an upset on Oshawa Polonia, with a 2-0 win, In Eastern Ontario playoffs, the Oshawa Thistle team won in Aurora 6-2 to take the round 9-5 . . . WHAT PRICE HITS ? Chicago had an even dozen safeties yesterday and Dodgers only had five but Dodgers won 3-1, to take the lead in the World Series--which now could end before leaving L.A. . . . DRYSDALE staggered through the early innings yester- day but Sherry was terrific in relief. In the meantime, day afternoon, when they defeat- ed Sarnia Polymer 5-4, in the third 4nd deciding game of their Ontario championship finals, at Simcoe. Duplate won the title the hard way, coming from behind a 4-0 deficit with a three-run rally in the 7th inning and then winning it on Gardian's two-run homer in the 8th. Kirkland, the Sarnia ace and Jack McConkey, Duplate's veter- an right-hander, hooked up as rival moundsmen in this erucial game and each had nine strike- outs, but the "'edge" came when McConkey improved as the game went along while his rival falter- ed after the sixth.
