THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, October 4d ive 13 on AUTO RACE CIRCUIT [ SA PO . PART OF THE ROLLING eountryside bought by Mosport Ltd. north of Bowmanville on the ninth concession in Clarke Roshi gives some idea of e kind of terrain on which the racing car enthusiasts hope to establish the biggest road racing circuit in Canada. The 450 acres lie close to Tyrone and are not far from the main highway 35 The slopes have Location Near Bowmanville TORONTO A huge 450-acre tract of rolling farmlands, stud- ed by woodlots and shade trees, pool and spectator vantage points at various places around the property are envisaged in . the just north of B: ille, will probably become the mecca of car racing in Canada. The prop- erty has been acquired by Mos: port Lrd., a company formed by the development committee of the old established British Empire Motor Club and numerous other sports car clubs to replace the old racing circuit at Harewood. The proposed new road-racing park will be developed along the lines of Donington Park in Eng- land, Le Mans in France and the Nurburgring in Germany. Acquisition of the land was made three years after the spon- soring club started its survey for a suitable site. The next phase, financing the layout and the fa- cilities is already under way. A , five-year development plan will given the promoters high hopes of also establishing a winter sports resort. Mosport Ltd. is an offshoot of many sports car clubs now in operation in the Toronto area. Crossman, : be drawn up and financing meth- ods will be decided. It is anticipated that this phase of the development will cost at least a quarter of a million dol- lars, to get a 'short" racing cir- cuit in operation by 1960 or early in 1961, It is hoped to get con- siderable revenue towards ex- penses from the sale of advertis- ing sites on the property. The activities of the new ven- ture will not be limited to car racing. The company hopes to establish a skiing centre, with possibly a champion ski jump. The company states that there is an ideal site for this on the property, as well as a short cir- cuit for ice-racing. Learner slopes for skiers will also be developed. A clubh and lete plan, Also included are provisions for time - keeping and scoring facilities, ambulance and fire services, press boxes and in- formation booths, footbridges and direction signs and public address systems. i The racing circuits being con- sidered include a short circuit be tween two and three miles in length designed for lap speeds of 90 miles an hour. An extension in the next. three years of the 'short" circuit, to provide an 'outer" circuit of approximately four miles to be used for long distance racing; 500 kilometres; 500 miles; 12 and 24 hour events with a lap speed of about 100 mph and a hill climb course one mile in length at the south end of the property. The property will be available to organized sports car and motor cycle clubs events which are not road events such as scrambling, reliability trials, grass track rac- ing, as well as gymkanhas. It is hoped to establish six prestige races to be run each summer, : Interest in the plans indicates there is good reason to believe that financing will be completed this fall. FAST SERVICE .
