It is the voice of the English-speaking Catholic women of Canada. It seeks the betterment of social action, the stimulation of effort in all lines of women's work, and gives unremitting support to the formation of enlightened public opinion. In particular it promotes the true ideals of Catholic family life and seeks to further the cause of Catholic education at all levels: to extend religious and civic help to immigrant groups of the Catholic faith, and to pro- mote social harmony. Its motto is "For God and Canada." The members of St. Gregory's Council meet monthly. The ex- ecutive and councillors are elect- ed to office, and the conveners of the standing committees are appointed by the president. The present officers are: Director, Very Rev.. The League year ended with a membership of 234. The treasur- er's annual report indicated a very satisfactory financial posi- tion, and a substantial cheque was given Dean Dwyer for par- ish projects. A room in the parish auditorium was furnished and eontributions were made to many causes, locally and on diocesan and national levels. In the field of education, two parish scholarships of $50 each were awarded to the boy and girl from St. Gregory's school with highest standing in Grade 12 and going on to Grade 13. Contributions were made to the CWL national scholarship and to the CWL provincial bursary. A library was also started im the parish auditorium, 'Empress of India' DOE Lodge Named For Reigning Queen The Daughters of England in Oshawa was organized in Novem- ber, 1893. Twenty-four men and women met and named the Lodge "Empress of India" after the reigning of Queen Victoria. This organization, since started fa Hamilton, Ontario, in 1890, now reaches from the east to west coasts, with lodges in every province including Adult and Ju- venile Lodges. Last year the Oshawa club was hostess for a convention of all the auxiliaries in Ontario at which re- presentativcs were present from Toronto, Hamilton, St. ines, Niagara Falls, Woodstock, Burlington, Kingston and the Young People's Club of Toronto. Murty, past presi- dent, represented St. Gregory's Council at the annual Archdio- cesan Convention im Toronto. Thorntons WA Is Undenominational The Women's Association at Thornton's Corners is am unde- nominational organization invit- ing all ladies of the community to join in the worship, work and social activities. It's main func- tion is to support the Sunday School, sponsor the Boy Scouts and Cubs and generally serve any needy cause in the commu- nity. Interesting and inspirational meetings are held the first Wed- nesday in each month from Sep- tember to June inclusive. Money is raised principally by catering, selling cards, yearly fees of members, giv- ings and donations. Last year the roll showed 35 embers 3rd Scout Auxiliary Meets at Simcoe St. The Third Oshawa Cub and Scout Mothers' Auxiliary held their meetings in Simcoe Street United Church. There were 10 executive meet- ings, 10 general meetings with an average attendance of 10. We raised a total of $83.42 by having a strawberrv social in the home of Mrs. F. Wilson, Simcoe street north; a bridge and tea in Mrs. T. Shepherd's home, Rit- son road morth; a rummage sale held in the church basement; We also had a bakeless bake sale. Our expenses for the year were $141.86. * A Christmas party was given to the boys, also a treat at Hallow- e'en with prizes for costumes. The cubs had a cook out in June. We provide money for the food. Of course our very special event of the year is the Father and Son banquet which was very successful. : We are looking forward to a bet- ter and more profitable year of 1960. We have several new mem- bers which is very encouraging.
