Laminate is only a sixteenth-inch thick and can be obtained in a great variety of colors and patterns. The thickness can be three-fourths inch (as a piece of exterior plywood) or one or more inches. First, remove any paint. varnish, shellac or lacquer. Always saw with the finish side of the laminate up. If it is necessary to use two pieces, the pieces can be held together (as shown in picture 2) by masking tape. Leave the tape on until the laminate has been cemented into place. When, the laminate is ready for application. brush on a coat of cement. Be sure to cover the entire back side, edge to edge. Then apply cement to the wood surface. Both surfaces should be allowed to dry for about twenty minutes. On new wood, two coats of cement will be necessary. THE CEMENT IS READY for bonding when a piece of wrapping paper is pressed on the surface and pulls off without taking up any of the cement. The cement bonds instantly on contact. Thus, have the laminate in proper position, see picture 3, before letting it touch the wood surface. The easiest way is to cover the wood surface with wrapping paper. Lay laminate on the paper. Then gradually slide the paper out and press down on the laminate as the paper is withdrawn. Go over the laminate with a rolling pin. Press hard. Or, slide a block of wood along while tapping it with a hammer. The excess laminate along the edges of the surface can be filed flush with the wood edge using a twelve-inch single-cut hand finishing file. When the edges of counters or tables are about three-quarters-inch thick, metal edge moulding with a color insert (see picture 5) can be used. If the edges (see picture 4) are more then three-quarters of an inch thick, laminate can be applied to the vertical surfaces. Use the file to create a beveled corner.
