Campbell Oust Unionvill eferee Ivan Locke was SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' OSHAWA'S ANNUAL 3-day Bonspiel is once again in the history elass but certainly the 1959 event will rate as one of the most successful in the history of the elub's fine record for top-flight eompetition. As men- tioned earlier this week, 19 of the 20 sets of available prizes, went to out-of-town entries, with Oscar Par- ker's Oshawa rink being the only exception. This four- some captured the Duplate Trophy and top prizes in ' the fifth event. Bayne Secord and the Tam O'Shanter Club entry defeated Ed Rhodes of Royal Canadians 6-4 in a thrill-packed semi-final game, the proved the best-played and tightest-scoring game of the entire bonspiel. Rhodes and his men won the Col R. S. Mc- Laughlin Trophy in 1958. The Tom O'Shanters had little trouble in their final game, as did most of the other trophy winners. Harry Howard's Granites won The Fittings Trophy secondary event, in the only real close "final" match of the five, over Jack Kennedy's Barrie rink. Not only the 100 curlers who took home prizes but all the other 28 rinks, voiced their enthu- siastic approval of this year's big Oshawa 'spiel. They liked the fellowship and entertainment, they liked the ice and the competition, the food and hospitality. To Frank McCallum, who was on hand for almost every hour of competition for the full three days, and to the members of his committee, who worked hard prior to and throughout the 3-day event, the officers and mem- bers of the Oshawa Curling Club owe a debt of grat- itude for a job well done and for maintaining and in- ereasing the prestige of this annual curling elassic. A big crowd of minor hockey fans was on hand at The Children's Arena last night and witnessed a spark- ling doubleheader, in which Oshawa Bantams blanked Lindsay 2-0 and the Local Midget Stars held Toronto Marlboro Midgets to a 1-1 deadlock. The win for the Bantams was especially pleasant -- they lost out to Lindsay in the annual Bantam tournament at Peter- borough on Boxing Day, in the final game of the tourney, Both games were fast but exceptionally clean, clearly in- dicating the Bantams and Midgets have "got the mes- sage". The regretable free-for-all business of last week has since been given a through investigation by Minor Assoc. officials and the penalties meted out of some of the Juvenile players for their part in that affair, should serve as a stern warning to all City League players that discipline must be maintained and that no individual or group of players is bigger than the game itself. BRIGHT BITS Boston Bruins blanked N.Y. Rangers 6-0 last night, to tighten their grip on fourth place and pull three points ahead of Black Hawks Canadiens added a couple of points also, beating second- they meet an place Toronto Leafs 3-1. Bronco Horvath got only one point (an assist) in Boston's half-dozen goals but "Roc- ket" Richard picked up an assist on Montreal's third tally, to once again take the lead over Gordie Howe, as all-time NHL point-scorer. Howe pulled up tied with Richard on Wednesday night, at the 9:45 mark . . : IT'S OFFICIAL!
