SATURDAY, JANUARY 23 Flight Into Space ONTARIO TODAY How can scientists judge whether life is likely on other planets? One method is to examine the chemical nature of life and then to consider whether such a chem- ical nature could exist in the differing con- ditions of the other planets. All forms of life on this Earth depend on the carbon atom. The pictures above are of an amoeba--amicroscopic parasite which is one of the lowest possible forms of animal life. It is continually changing its shape and chemical construc- tion as the carbon atoms continually at- tract and lose atoms of hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. Carbon atoms can form links with Or no oxygen, and a preponderance of poison gases which one another and with other types of atom far more readily then any other atoms can. In this way they alone can build up the immensely complicated molecules of which living things exist. This complex formation can only take place in a limited temperature range -- and most planets are either too hot or too cold for the process. Moreover, all carbon- life needs a supply of oxygen if it is to have any energy. Most planets have little and some have no water would make life based on the carbon atom unthinkable. Confident Living BY DR. NORMAN VINCENT PEALE Tg has a magic all its own. Really, it's very strange how we overlook the simple truth that if we love peoole and treat them with kindliness, they will love us in return. My family and I have been the guests of a gentle lady, eigthy years old. The life of this woman, however, has been far from serene and tranquil. And her delicate gentility does not blind one to her rugged strength and purpose. Bertha Spafford Vester is one of the oldest resident of Jerusalem, Jordan, one of the best known, and admittedly the best loved. To me, her baby hospital, the Spafford, Memorial Hospital, was the most deeply moving of all the sights I saw either in Jordan or Israel, including all the holy places. The latter are memorials of Chris- tianity. Her hospital for babies and little children is Christianity in current action. I felt the presence of an alive Christ as we passed from bed to bed looking into appealing little faces. And there was one other moment when I felt the Presence. It was the day we drove with Mrs. Vester to Emmaus, that little town where Jesus, after His cruci- fixion, appeared to two disciples as they walked. Well, now this village is on the tensely guarded border between Jordan and Israel where good people on both sides of the line live in enmity. We wanted to see if we, too, might "meet" the Lord on the road to Emmaus. As we neared the border Jordanian soldiers stopped us politely but a bit sternly. Then the husky sergeant saw Mrs. Vester. He ran to her and kissed her hand. As we passed on she explained, simply, "He was one of my babies." As she spoke, I had my meeting with Jesus on the Emmaus Road. PAGE SEVENTEEN CANADA NEEDS TECHNICIANS There exists today a definite need for highly qualified technicians in engineering and scientific fields. Is Your English Holding "Many intelligent men and women are held back in their jobs and social lives because they use poor English or can't speak and write effectively," says Don Bo- lander, director of English at Career Institute, Chicago. "Adults who realize that their English is holding them back use our new home method to stop making embarrassing mistakes in English, to improve their writing, to increase their vocabularies, to speed up their reading, to acquire the techniques of fluent conver- sation. But the use of effective English pays off in unexpected ways," says Bolander, "because language is a tool of thought as well as a tool of expression. You Back? "You use words with which to think. The more you learn about words and how to arrange them to express your ideas, the better your thinking becomes. The improve- ment of your English--including your thinking--can lead to amaz- ing personal achievements." For those interested, Bolander has made available a free 32- page booklet that tells how you can gain the ability to speak and write like a college graduate, in your own home. Just put your name and address on a card or letter and send to Don Bolander, Dept E-ON-1,30 East Adams, Chi- cago 3, Illinois. The booklet will be mailed promptly with no ob- ligation, of course.
