CHILD GUIDANCE Is Tutoring The Best Way To Help The Lagging Child? "Do you love me as THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, March 16 1960 11 BIG Money - Sowing VALVES / IN oi oRu6 Sly 777 88 Pow ane . By G. "I rarely do," he replied. "The parent tends to wash her hands of responsibility on providing a tutor. Usually the lagging child is dull or lazy. The problem is to induce the parent to get be- hind the school program." SIMILAR ATTITUDES One may read similar attitudes about tutoring in articles in our rent educational journals. On questioning that guidance director further, I found he had chiefly in mind the laggard in junior or senior high school. In many letters from parents, | 1 read that they often are ad- vised by the school against out- side help for the child. An occa- sional teacher or principal is| said to discourage help for even the poor reader in a reading clinic not provided by the school DEFENSIVE REACTION A big reason for such advice I suspect, is that the teacher or sehool official assumes that, if he advises a tutor for a school child, he will be admitting that the school is not doing well enough by the child--a defensive reaction. Yet the average classroom is so crowded, and the facilities for individual help of the lagging learner so limited, that we might suppose the school would wel- come and encourage any reason- able measure of outside help. Fortunately an occasional school does have a good program for helping the child improve his learning skills in any or all of his school subjects. Even in such a school, some outside help might be desirable Any child beyond the primary grades who can read a little should be able, with proper help to read better and achieve bet- ter ways of learning from. books, even though he might not reach the level of the average child of his age. MAY TRY HARDER As this child enjoys more suc- cess at books he may use more effort at learning. Nevertheless that guidance expert had a point when he referred to laziness. All too many children, es- pecially in the upper grades and high school, have never been trained at home to follow a regu- lar program of going at home- work and sticking to it faithfully, even for as long as 15 or 30 min- ules at a stretch. No matter how good the help of his parents or a tutor with his lessons, the child may profit little from it. If the parent merely provides a tutor, without having disecip- GUIDE-STEP the correct shoe for growing children Product of 32 years of scientific research, Hewetson Guide-Steps are the correct shoes for normal, healthy children.
