SATURDAY, MARCH 26 ONTARIO TODAY Parachute club members watch a first jump. Sky Diver Ilona Berger Jumps For Joy Ilona prepares to add to her total of 143 jumps. ALLING can be fun, according to a small but growing number of Ontario people, who literally jump for joy. These: 'are the sky divers, who say they have discovered a blissful way of "getting away. from it all". Floating through space, over a lovely, patch-work countryside (they say), the parachutist' is alone and free, surrounded only by a blessed silence and buoyed by a marvellous feeling of excite- ment and joie de vivre. The sport, long popular in Europe, has' been gaining in popularity in Canada in ithe past 15 years. The Parachute Club of Canada, which lists 150 members, is 'by no means a masculine preserve; 25 of its jumpers are women. Foremost woman parachutist in Canada is petite, red-haired Ilona Berger, who 'fled her native Hungary after the uprising in 1956. Brought to Canada in the winter of 1957, following a month in an Austrian refugee camp, the tiny 20-year-old, who spoke no English on her arrival, set herself the three-fold task of mastering a new language, finding a job and re-establishing herself in her favorite sport. Jumping first with the parachute club at St. Catharines, and later with the Toronto.club, Miss Berger made her: first circle of Canadian friends through the common bonds of an international sport. She made her first jump at the age of 15. Three years later, in 1955, she won the Hungarian Women's Championship and the following year represented her country at the international com- petition in Moscow. She has never been injured in a jump, although she has broken her elbow and an ankle in the gym. She will not be able to try our for the 1960 world jumping competition, because she is not yet a citizen, but she has her eye on the 1962 cham- 'pionship. Ilona checks the shroud lines on her parachute before packing it, after a Baldwin Airport jump. "There are two types of 'chuting: precision jumps where the parachutist tries to land within a target area; and sky diving, in which.a wide variety of acrobatics are performed -- loops, rolls and turns, Sky divers claim it is the world's most exacting and exciting sport.
