If floors are in poor condition, wall-to-wall carpeting may be the most economical choice, since carpet can provide a (finished floor as well as a decorative area of color in a room. Good quality carpeting, installed with padding which helps to fill in uneven spots, can save the cost of ex- pensive floor refinishing. On the other hand, if floors are in good condition, a room-size rug would permit handsome flooring to show and would still provide softness and warmth underfoot. Consider an unbroken expanse of carpeting if architectural fea- tures of a room are poor. Color and texture on the floor can help make a small room seem larger or can aid in "pulling together" rooms or areas which are broken up by jogs and corners. If a room is a regular size and shape -- say, a large rectangle-- a room-size rug will provide a pleasing 'decorative frame" around the room. Compete culor schemes #an be built around the carpet or rug, since the floor is the largest un- broken area of color within a room. Paint, upholstery and drapery fabrics and accent colors can all be chosen to complement or harmonize with the floor. First, be sure to test your soil to discover if soil is acid and its degree of acidity. (Inexpensive testing kits are available,) The type of soil determines how much lime to apply. To sandy or gravelly soil, add peat, well-rotted manure, or well decomposed sawdust. To clay soil, add sand, perlite, vermicu- lite, or scoria, Just before planting, apply and rake in a complete, inorganic fertilizer (one containing nitro- gen, phosphorus, and potash) at a rate- that will provide two impact noise by at least 50 per cent within a room -- so this functional benefit of keeping rooms quieter should be consider- ed in total planning. If home remodeling calls for adding a room to a house, or per- haps refinishing, unused space such as an attic, it may be prac- tical to lay carpet over an um- finished floor. These functional carpet "duties" can offer worthwhile savings which are always impor- tant to the improvement of the home. pounds of actual nitrogen per 1000 square feet. The first step in plantings 10 select high quality seeds of grasses that are adapted to your soil and climate. After sowing, the seed should be covered lightly by hand rak- ing from % to 3% inch deep in the case of large seeds, amd to % inch deep, when small seeds are used. Mulching with a light covering of weed-free straw or hay or with open-meshed sack- ing cloth will prevent the seed from washing away during watering or rain. If the gardener thinks his job is finished when the seeds are im -- well, he's wrong. New seedlings must be kept moist until well established. Once seeds have begun to germinate, they must not dry out or they will die, (Avoid excessive mois- ture, however.) Early spring and fall are the time to fertilize bluegrass, fes- cues, and other cool-seasom grasses (those making their maximum growth in spring and fall). Do not apply fertilizers -- parc- ticularly inorganic -- when the grass leaves are wet. Water the lawn immediately after applying fertilizer to wash off the leaves and thus prevent burning.
