HENRY Oshawa "°° Juels Vice-President 3 Sections In History Of Forests The story of Canadian forest products industries falls into three periods. The first lasted for generations | and ended about the same time as World War 1. It was marked by rapid expansion and a ceaseless effort to keep pace with a mar- ket which seemed impossible to satisfy, Naturally, this led to practices which are today consid- ered wasteful and extravagant, and to a oertain indifference to quality of output, all of which, it must be remembered, were justi- fied by the demands and stan- dards of the age. The geriod that followed was relatively short, hardly more than a breathing spell, For some years after World War One, mar- kets were disorganized; new products developed for war pur- poses were directed into commer- cial channels and challenged wood in many fields; competition was keen. The wood- using industries OIL BUILDS FOR YOUR were forced to pause, take stock and set their houses in order. Today we are in the midst of an era of greater promise than ever before imagined. It is an era of new and wonderful products and of scientific methods of manufacture. New machinery, new methods and greater know- ledge of wood itself have com- bined to bring about higher stan- dards of quality, and greater thrift and foresight in the harvesting and use of our forest wealth.
