Er TL TH aed 14 ™E woes vv TTMES, " Wednssiay, May 11, 1960 Veneer And Plywood Increase Importance In recent years an industry relatively new to Canada has acquired a position of increasing importance, This is the manu- facture of veneer and plywood. Sheets of veneer are usually eut in two ways, eiiher by re- volving a log against a stationary knife, so that a long, continuous sheet is produced, or by cutting a block of wood into thin slices. Veneers vary from less than 1-100th of an inch up too ¥% of an inch or even more in thickness. Thin veneers may be applied to the surface of wood used in fur- piture, pianos, or other high-class cabinet work, to give a beautiful finish. Thin veneers may also be glued together to form light ply- wood such as is used in the coverings of wings and fuselages of some aircraft. The thicker veneers may be used by them- selves in the manufacture of cheese boxes, or other contain- ers. The outstanding feature of ply- wood is the strength obtained by asembling veneers so that the grain of the wood in different pieces lies in different directions. Several sheets of thick veneer may be glued together to form three-ply, five-ply, seven-ply, ete., depending on the purpose for HAROLD WILKINS, Hamp- ton, is the dispatcher. This heavy plywood may be used for house-panelling, both interior and exterior, door panels, con- crete forms, interior and exterior house sheathing, exteri wall- board, sub-floors, structural mem- bers, in ships, aircraft and for many other purposes. Another industry parelleling the growth of plywood (and compet- ing with it) in recent years is the wallboard industry which in- cludes the manufacture of par- ticle board, insulation board and hardboard. The industry is par- ticularly favored with an abun- dance of raw materials, as a large part of these consist of former waste products of sawmills, such as slabs and edgings, trims, and sawdust. It has also stimulated the use of low grade hardwoods which were formerly left in the forest. As the virgin coniferous for- ests were eventually cut over and | depleted of large, tall trees, the residual stands naturally consist- ed of substantially smaller ma- terial. To meet the needs of heavy construction, a new industry was born -- the manufacture of lamin- ated timber structures (glulam). Essentially, laminated struetwe- al members consist of component lengths of lumber composed so that the grain of the wood in dif- ferent pieces lies in the same di- rection. These are bound together by adhesives into timbers of large cross-section. One feature of flulam members is that they can easily be fabricated inte curved arches. Many of th ese are being used today im the eon- struction of churches and audi- | toriums, where large, unsupport- led roof areas are required. An- feature of glulam is the provision of natural beauty of |wood m an engineered structure.
