We don't mean the edible, bovine variety but the "beef" that in modern slang describes somebody's verbal objection, resentment, pro- test, etc. The price of "beef" as far as Carl Furillo is concerned, may prove mighty expensive before the year is out, Hampered by a fairly serious leg injury and at his age, 38, admitted to be in the twilight of his career at least, or more bluntly, on the downgrade, Carl Furillo was this week given his unconditional release by the Los Angeles Dodgers. It really wasn't much of a surprise, or shouldn't have been. even to: Furillo, be- cause the impending action was somewhat more than merely rumored, well over a week ago. Furillo, who back in the days of the "Brooklyn Bums" at Flatbush, was one of their greats and even last year, did a good share in helping Dodgers win the World Series, is now threating to sue the Dodgers and refuses to accept his release. Mmm! Even with a contract, how can you refuse to be fired ? ESTABLISHED -- f]D -- "Where those good DOVERCOATS come from" Furillo insists that if he had been notified earlier, he might have caught on with some other major league ball club, to finish out the season, but that this chance was withheld from him, by not being released until after the date when all clubs had to cut their rosters, General Manager Bavasi of the Dodgers offered Furillo a chance to finish the season with their Spokane club-- at no reduction in salary. This, we feel, is the key pitch against Furillo's hopes of a successful legal action. But also--he'll not likely have as many of the fans on his side now. Back in Brooklyn, they loved him Out in Los Angeles, his stay hasn't been long enough to build up too many endearing friendships. And besides, GM Bavasi got a real break too. He stated Monday that the Dodgers were electing a youth policy, were going along with young players and letting older players go. And what happens? Bavasi named Frank Howard as an ex- ample. And Tuesday Howard proves Bavasi right by hitting 2 bases-loaded homer, to give Dodgers a cov=- eted win over Bob Buhl and the Milwaukee Braves. Carl Furillo should be in Spokane right now---saving his money to open up his own business, back in Brook- lyn, maybe!
