SATURDAY, MAY 28 ot, Your Garden in June ONTARIO TODAY Still Planting Time BY A. W. RUNDLE OW the air is warm, the grass is green, trees and shrubs are blooming. Now you are watching your roses budding and breaking forth into those beautiful fra- grant blooms. The planting season in some areas is well advanced, but you can still have a garden even if you have not yet started. There is still time to plant most varieties of vegetable seeds, and ;such flower seeds as zinnias, mari- golds, portulaca, poppies and clarkia. Your garden centre or green house will also have plants for June planting. Nursery plants can be planted now also, if you secure them in a container or balled in burlap. Be sure to water well all new planting. The best method of water- ing is to soak the ground to a good depth and then leave for a few days or a week. Do not sprinkle the surface daily--this causes the roots to come close to the sur- face and gives you a shallow root system. Cultivation of the soil is very impor- tant this month in order to keep down the weeds but it is also beneficial to the plant in that it allows the air to the plant roots. On a day when there is no wind and the temperature is above 70 degrees you could remove the weeds from your lawn with 2-4-D. Be sure to follow manufac- turers directions and do not allow it to drift on your shrubs or flowers. After you have treated for weeds you should apply a non-burning type of fertilizer to thick- en the grass. When the blooms of hybrid tea roses have died, cut the stem back to a leaf with five petals and if growth is very heavy you can cut back even more. By adding more plant food now you will produce more flowers. Do not neglect to spray your roses with a rose dust containing both insecticide and fungicide about every ten days. You must protect them from black spot fungus. You can not take it off ° once it is on. Be on the look out for in- sects; they multiply very fast and can do much damage to your plants very quickly. The large brown June bug flying in the evening will remind you that the larva of this bug, or the white grub as we call it, is now starting to eat the roots off your grass, your flowers, vegetables, trees and shrubs. This is the ideal time to treat the soil for this pest. There are several good materials that you can use for this purpose, both in powder form and liquid. As the weather gets warmer you could raise the cutting height of your lawn mower to at least one and a half inches. The higher you cut the grass the better it will stand the heat and dry weather. If watering is necessary, give the lawn a soaking to a depth of six to eight inches. Light surface watering causes a shallow root system and will make a very weak turf.
