DR. THOMAS' ECLECTRIC OIL ONTARIO TODAY Jack "Doc" Kearns BY TRENT FRAYNE HE most remarkable figure in the half- world of the fight game is not Ingemar Johansson or Floyd Patterson or Ray Robiuson or even the goateed mongoose, Archie Moore. No, the most remarkable figure is Jack (Doc) Kearns, OI' Arch's archaic manager who first achieved fame and fortune as Jack Dempsey's deepest thinker forty years ago and, as we skip- rope to press, is still beguiling the ears off anyone he can catch in a half-Nelson. Recently, uncounted scores found no escape in Toronto when the Mayor of ali the People, nimble Nathan Phillips first announced that Varsity Stadium would be the site of a heavyweight title fight between Moore and Erich Schoppner of Germany. There in the front row, waiting for his worship to recognize a comma, was the renowned Doc, wearing his lean and hungry look, ready to rush in with several diphthongs. The instant the mayor breathed, Kearns struck his favorite pose -- in which his mouth is open and sound is emanating. "This will be a great fight, a great fight," said Kearns. "Moore is one of the amazing men of our time. What is that other fellow's name?" Kearns, who is 76 and has been around fighters for 60 years, is a tall, angular, articulate man with the barest beginnings of a paunch challenging the middle but- ton of an impeccable Italian-silk jacket, made, it appears of pure gold. He cocks his head like a turkey when he's talking; possibly testing his audience's absorption 'capacity. He was talking particularly constantly (with Kearns, even the ultimate has shades of degree) the first time. I saw Moore works on James J. Parker. Amazing ( Mr. Kearns him, which was four years ago when he was party to an atrocity involving Moore and one James J. Parker, a Canadian youth with a large nose that Moore kept tapping speculatively in the manner of a robin poking quizically at a new species of worm. Before this aromatic exercise was per- petrated in full view of some 20,00C hoaxed viewers one warm July night at Maple Leaf Stadium, Toronto was subjected to the most: fantastic promo- tional legerdemain since the celebrated Sack of Shelby, a fiasco in which Kearns, by no coincidence, also had a part in 1923. It was on July 4 that year that he took Dempsey to Shelby, a little Mon- tana oil town of barely a thousand popula- tion, to destroy a man named Tommy Gibbons. In coup that will live forever in boxing annals, Kearns made off with nearly $300,000, which he had conned the enthusiastic burghers into guarantee- ing him, causing three banks which had underwritten the enterprise, to close their doors. "Four," says the Doc in happy re- collection. "One up in Great Falls went busted a. couple weeks later." Kerans is among the last of the great tradition of fight managers, and his long- time friend, Deacon Jack Allen of To- ronto, is another. As the late John Lardner once wrote of the species: " The manager may be a racketeer or a parasite, but, in his best form, he is a man of wit and skill, as exhilarated by a sense of his .own personality as any fighter could be, and proud, as no other kind of agent or 'ree rider' is, of the thought that he makes his way by what the manager * CONTINUED ON PAGE 18 PAGE FIFTEEN * Weighs only 7 ibs. ¢ Interchangeable barrels e Exclusive "Varl-Welght" principle Compare shooting qualities and you'll buy the Remington Model 870 'Wingmaster".
