AJAX (Staff) == For the past year the Ajax Presbyterian Church has been holding fits services in the auditorium of Parkside Public School in Ajax. Prior to the construction of several of Ajax's churches, the various denominations worship- ed in a similar manner in this 20-year-old community. In the case of the Presbyter- jan Church permission had to be sought from the Ajax Pub- lic School Board for the one year term of agreement and this body has drafted a set of rules for organizations that wish to use the schools' facilities. At their May meeting the Public School Board received a letter from the Ajax Presbyter- ian Church requesting permis- sion to use the Parkside School for its services. In addition the church asked the board if it could use the auditorium during school vacation time, or in licu of the auditorium --- a class room. It is the policy of the school board, as stated in the rules, that no organization can use the schools during vacations be- cause that is the time set aside {for such maintenance items as {general repairs and painting. $30 MONTHLY |" Therefore on Monday the Public School Board became in- volved in a discussion on whe- ther the church should be given sanction to use the Parkside School as requested. Property chairman, Frank Smith pointed out to the newer | members of the board that the |auditorium was rented to the |church for $30 per month. He said that out of this sum the school caretaker had to be paid {$5 each Sunday that church ser- {vices were held and that the re- | mainder of the money was used [to pay for heating, lights and {other expenses. | Some members of the hoard {felt that in letting the church use the auditorium during |school vacations, the mainten- | ance program would be interfer- led with. These members felt that the church should attempt to make other arrangements {during school vacations. | "We have assisted other |churches in Ajax," argued Fi- {nanace Committee Chairman {Jack Reid, "Just because we {have set rules restricting the use of the schools at these times is no reason why we can't see fit to aid them." "We should reflect the spirit |of Christianity and help them," {he said, "They are not Moham- {medans or Buddhists or Com- munists, they are people." CBC Expects To Lose Money OTTAWA (CP)--The CBC ex- pects to lose $5,000,000 next year in competition with the "sec-| ond" TV stations. | 8 The Commons broadeasting| committee viewed a graph|/ Tuesday which showed a de-| cline to $35,000,000 in commer-|§ cial revenues from $40,000,000 estimated for the current cal-| endar year. It went unexplained, | § but undoubtedly was due to ad. | vertising being shifted from the, CBC to the private second sta-| tions in eight major cities. | Chief use of the graph by J. Alphonse Ouimet, CBC presi dent. was to explain to the com- mittee the corporation's estim ate that its over-all costs dur ing the next few years will rise eight per cent annually to keep |i pace with TV developments. | He said that the corporation [88 soon may report a $2,000,000 | 3 budgetary surplus for the fiscal |3 year ended March 31. Church Meets In Basement Trustee Reid put forward a motion granting the church per- mission to use the school as re- quired, "If we let the church use the school auditorium dur- ing school time it will be unfair if we forbid the church the use of the facilities at such sacred times as Easter and Christ- mas," he said. Although the other trustees were sympathetic to the church's needs, another motion was put forward tabling Mr. Reid's motion for the next board meeting in June, so that the board could learn if the school's maintenance program of the Parkside Public School would not conflict with the Presbyterian Church's ser- vices. Pool Cost Is $57,000 AJAX (Staff) = The Build- ing Committee of the Ajax Community Memorial Swim- ming Pool have officially set the| target figure for the complete] financing of the pool at $57,000 To date the Pool Commit. {tee has received a total of $45,000 in cash of pledges, the |most recent donation of $5000 {from the Kinsmen €lub of Ajax. | Therefore the target of the {May Canvass is $12,000 and the {pool committee are confident [that this amount will be realiz- fed. | The original estimate for the cost of the project was $65,000 but the Building Committee, made up of such public spirited citizens as G. Robinson, G. Dal- gliesh, J. Farley, V. Ames, F, Peterson, W. Maidman and Jim Smith, have worked stead: |ily since last summer preparing for the beginning of the con- struction of the pool. After three or four shovelfulls were thrown around the roots, Mr. Kennedy looked up and said: "This is only symbolic, you know." The crowd laughed and Mr. Kennedy continued shovelling. Then he handed the shovel to Mr. Diefenbaker and said: "How about you?" Mr. Diefenbaker took the shovel and stood it upright in the soil beside the tree. The party then moved another dozen yards across a sunny open space in the Government House grounds, and Mrs. Ken- nedy planted her tree. She threw three dainty hai.- shovels of soil around the roots and put the shovel aside. The crowd applauded. The two trees, picked to fit the landscape surroundings, were planted a short distance from a hard maple former president Eisenhower planted in November, 1953.
