BIBLE LESSON Isaac Provides Strong Example By NEWMAN CAMPBELL The importance of this lesson on self-control is pointed out by the statistics showing the shock- ing increase in American lately of major crimes, juvenile delin- quency, lawlessness, dope addic- tion and alcoholism. A "magnificent example of self-control is found in the ex- perience of Isaac and his wells (Genesis 26:12-32.) When the envy. of the Philistines for has been added to Solomon's list--the carnage on our high- ways. The crime of murder is thus all too often the concomit- ant of drink. Dr. Smith cites the striking decrease in all crimes in Kings- port, Tenn., after the outlawing of beer recently. In New Jersey, our heaviest-drinking state, "it indicated," according to Gov- |ernor Meyner, "that an alcohol factor is present in from 30 to GOLDEN TEXT "The fruit of the Spirit is kindness, goodness, faithfulne Galatians 5:22, 23. love, joy, peace, longsuffering, ss, meekness, self - control" -- Isaac's business success drove them to plug up his wells with dirt, making it impossible for his herds to survive here, he did not storm in anger as most men would have done. When Abimelech, king of the Philis- tines, asked him to move away, he did so quietly. Four times his wells had to be re-dug before the situation was resolved. In the end, Isaac's self-control not only avoided warfare; it also brought Abime- lech to him as a friend. In his Proverbs (2) Solomon exhorts his son to *'stay on the straight and narrow," as we would say, avoiding evil com- panions and seeking always understanding. Wilbur M. Smith makes the point (in "Peloubet's Select Notes") that it is not necessary to know evil in order to live righteously. The 'strange woman, even 50 per cent of (traffic) fatali- ties." BARCLAY WARREN When the church fails in some aspect of its mission, it may soon find itself attacking a movement that has arisen in the vacuum, occasioned by its own neglect. Church history is filled with illustrations of this. Jesus said to His disciples on the eve of His ascension, "Ye shall receive power when the Holy Ghost has come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the |earth." Acts 1:8. The early church saw the ful filiment of this prediction in a Witnessing the lievers had the urge to make Christ known. All were kings and priests unto God. (Rev. 1:6). Philip (not the apostle) went to Samaria and preached Christ. "There was great joy in that city." Then, at the direction of ! the Holy Spirit, he went across country to a desert area. There he met an Ethiopian official reading from the 53rd chapter of Isaiah as he journeyed home from Jerusalem. Philip began at the Scripture he was study- ing and preached unto him, not churchanity, but Jesus. The Ethiopian believed with all his heart and was baptized. After the martyrdom of Stephen, under the fierce persecution led by Saul, "They that were scat- tered abroad, went everywhere preaching the word." No won- der the church grew. Now, I don't believe all that is taught by people who go from door to door to teach the Scriptures, any more than I buy from every salesman who comes to the door.
