Convict- ed by an all-male jury after more than two hours' delibera- tion were Kenneth Kavelman, 19, of 318 Albert St., and Gor- don Bryant, 19, of 487 Ortona St. They were both found guilty of breaking into a service sta- tion owned by Fred Lawless on Nov. 17 and stealing a 1958 Pon- tiac and a further charge of being 1n possession of that car, knowing it to be stolen. They were found not guilty of a charge of breaking into Acadian Cleaners, Bloor St. W., on the same night and stealing 12 cuff- links and a tie bar. On the two they received 18 months, the sentences to run concurrently. Bryant is now serving a one- year sentence for car theft. Before sentence was passed, Crown Attorney Bruce Affleck read both accused's records which included similar offences. He saia that as Crown Attorney he was becoming very much concerned with the number of such offences in this area and, he said, although some of the cause could be unemployment, he would ask a penalty which woulc act as a deterrent to others. For Breaking, Theft the accused ran around to the back of the service station. Brear said that he pulled up in front of the building and shut off his car lights. As they went out, he said, a 1958 Pontiac shot out from the rear, turned south on Brock St., then west on Wal- nut. He said he followed and took the licence number and| relayed it to police. PC Peter J Mandryk, of the Oshawa Police Department, said that at 2:05 a.m. Nov. 17 he was on a routine service sta- tion patrol when he checked Sargant's Garage, 278 Park Rd. S., Oshawa, and saw Gordon Bryant at the north west corner of the building. "1 gathered he was trying to oper. the door there," he told the court. He said that Bryant saw the cruiser, then ran to a car park- ed at the rear. The officer drove his cruiser around and blocked this car in.
