There are two classes of rain apparel--those that are shower- proof and those that are water- proofed. Shower or rain-proofed garments are usually made of woven fabrics that have had an additional treatment of shower- proofing or rain-proofing added to the fabric. This group of rain apparel will resist light showers, but it is not absolutely water- proof. The second group, called "water-proofed garments", will completely repel moisture. These garments are usually made of a rubberized or plastic coated fabric. Another type of water - proofed garment is the plastic type garment. The main disadvantage of the water-proof- ed garment is that they must be completely non-porus and there- fore. they are very warm to wear. If you are looking for a new rain coat, be sure the fabric is pre-shrunk, otherwise, buy the garment on the large side to al- low for future shrinkage. Ask if the coat is dry cleanable. Buy a fabric that is closely woven and one that is colorfast to water and dry cleaning solvents. Make sure the seams are sewn and not stuck together with an adhe- sive. The adhesive used to stick these seams together is usually solvent soluble. When this is the case, the seams will separate in cleaning. Finally, just a few tips on the care of rain apparel: 1. Don't let your rain clothes NEWS IN BRIEF ROLE FOR ROZ Rosa'ind Russell, star of the movie Auntie Mame, plays a Jéwish matron from Brooklyn in Warner Brothers' new movie Majority of One.
