FLAKING MORTAR QUESTION: The foundation of my home is made of large stone and rock held together by |mortar. Several years ago i painted these basement walls with an aluminum paint. The mortar is now flaking and be- coming a fine powder under the paint. I want to repaint these |walls. Is there a treatment I can use over the walls in their present state to preserve them? I am sure this problem did not arise due to a moisture condi- tion. ANSWER: If you are positive there is no moisture factor con- tributing to the crumbling mor- tar. I can only conclude the mortar itself (too skimpy a proportion of cement in the mixture). In time, this will act as you have experienced. You might experiment with trans- parent, liquid cement harden- ing preaparations before going to the heavy expense of remor- taring. First, though, you will have to scrape off any paint so| that the hardener can work on the mortar itself. Try this out on a small test area first.
