Radio boys eked out ia 54 win. a | SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' OSHAWA TONY'S expect to present a brand new face to Oshawa softball fans, when they take on De- pendable Caterers in their Beaches Major Softball League game, here at Alexandra Park tonight. Man- ager Frank Foley reports that arrangements have been made to have "Bonnie" Jones don a uniform tonight, to pitch against the undefeated dependables, "Bonnie" Jones hails from Detroit, where as a former teammate and also a former rival of Charlie Justice, he has pitched a lot of top-flight softball in recent years. At 27, he is a veteran of World's softball tournament action, having had nine wins against four defeats in this type of competition. Two years ago, in the Upper Michigan State League, he had 33 wins against only 3 defeats. A top calibre pitcher is just what Tony's need to make them "the team to beat" in this season's Beach- es League race and perhaps one of the Jones boys will be the answer, ' A BITTER PILL was what the Peterborough Or- chard Park softball team had to swallow in their flood- light game here last night. They were leading 5-4 over Scugog Cleaners, with two out in the last of the 9th, and nobody on bases. Then came a slashing drive by Jackie Sneddon that was good for three bases, thanks to his speed. The visitors then, with two out, elected to put the potential winning run on base with a de- liberate walk, rather than pitch to Burke. Then Mapes worked their pitcher for another walk--to fill the bases. But the worst was yet to come. The next batter popped a little weak one for which the 2nd baseman had to take a couple of steps in, in order to get underneath it. But an over-anxious 1st baseman also moved a few steps over--both reached for it-- one of them touched it--but the ball fell to the ground before they picked it up--two runners were over the plate and Scugogs had won 6-5. TONY'S VENDORS won their game last night, scored five runs in the first inning and then hung on for a 5-3 win behind Ronnie Taylor's six-hit pitching performance. The win moved Tony's up tied for first place--because Heffering's Imperials dropped a 6-1 verdict in the Liftlock City last night, to Lakefield. Ray Judd fanned 21 Oshawa batters and gave up just two hits--but one was a home-run. blow by Reg. Hickey. Imperials and Tony's are now tied for top--along with Scugog Cleaners. Behind the three-way tie for first comes MacLean's, who have just as many wins--but twice as many losses--having played two more games. The standings could be changed easily before the week is out. Tomorrow night, Heffering's play Scugog Clean- ers in the first game while MacLean's play Peterbor- ough UEW in the floodlight game. On Friday night, Orchard Park is back here again--for their postponed game with Heffering's, at eight o'clock. BRIGHT BITS:- Oshawa Minor Softball Association President Joe Victor has called an important meeting for Monday night, 8:15 p.m., at Simcoe Hall. All Bantam and Midget teams must have their certificates ready Playoff arrangements will also be decided on Monday night . , . THE BONANZA of "Baseball Baby Bonus Bounty" is about over. The clubs are realizing that it is financial suicide to continue paying out fabulous prices to the "autioneering" pros- pects and it looks as if the clubs will ceas®out-bidding themselves in the "ho¥ much am I offered" routine and instead, institute a free agent draft system. It makes sense--it would be cheaper to get a prospect via the grab-bag system rather than pay five and six-digit prices for a prospect--who still might prove a flop. College Hill got only one run loff three hits in the third in- {ning and their second run was UF, Peel's big blow in the fourth.
