12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, June 29, 196) CANADA'S BIG NEED Swimming Facilities Western Ontario in London, was coach of the 1960 Olympic team. "The 10 men and women who made up our swimming team were the best coached and best trained swimmers and divers we had ever sent into interna- tional competition . . . and not one of them reached peak per- formance." "Everyone was improving in training at Rome when their| race was swum. The fault doesn't lie with the coaches or| Minus Quantity Here BY JACK SULLIVAN Canadian Press Staff Writer Not one member of Canada's 1960 Olympic swimming team reached peak performance at the Rome Games. This is tantamount to saying that Canadian Olympic swim- mers were a bunch of loafers who didn't train and who went to Italy on an expenses-paid junket as part of a Canadian team that served to point up Canada as a third-rate na- tion on the international sports scene. This was not the case. The fault can be traced to a number of obstacles facing amateur sport in Canada--lack of facili- ties, expert coaching, apathy on the part of the public to its ath- letes, and so on. It's an old, old story and has been repeated on numerous oc- casions since the Second World War years. THREE--DAY CLINIC With this background, it was enlightening last weekend when 60 Ontario swimmers and coaches gave up three days of their time and up to $40 of their hard-earned money to listen to all of this stuff and much more from experts. There wasn't a dissenting voice and all went away convinced that the clinic was worth-while. It was held at the Ontario Athletic Commission camp at Lake Couchiching, about 90 miles north of Toronto. Panel di were ducted by experts from the United States and American pro coaches gave tips on stroke technique. Panelists didn't hold their punches and the facts and fig- ures brought out made outsid- ers wince. Such as: There are only 3,000 regis- tered amateur swimmers in Canada, believed to be the lowest per capita in the world. This compares with 30,000 in Australia, 20,000 in New Zea- land and 1,000 in Michigan in the U.S. alone. JUST THREE POOLS There are only three 55-yard pools (Olympic and British Empire Games size) in Canada P. Hauch of London, Ont, president of the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association who dreamed up the idea of the clinic, Canada. "The majority of our swim- mers were not in 50-metre or 55-yard pools between the 1959 Pan-American Games and the 1960 Olympic Games," said John Faulkner of the University of Michigan. "This is a real problem. z "How?" he asked, '"'can any- one expect swimmers to ex- cel in international competition when they are forced to train in 25-yard pools? They haven't the faintest idea what they can do in the longer pools."
