SPEER JONES The lesson today is very short, but its content is long on mean- ing for all of us. The example of Dorcas shows that every job] or talent, however menial, can serve as a channel of Christian love -- of gratitude to God through kindnesses to our fellow men. Joppa, the city where Dorcas lived, is today known as Jaffa, the only good harbor south of Haifa on the Palestinian coast. It was this harbor from which Jonah sailed to try to escape God's mission. Jaffa is also fa- mous for its orange groves, and as the home of Simon the tan- ner, who is introduced in the last verse of this lesson. Simon's home was the place where Peter stayed for some( time after the incident in this| lesson. It is where the great future teacher of the Gentiles saw the vision teaching the equality of Jews and Gentiles| before God. It is interesting to note that Peter's Jewish convictions al ready must have been weak- ened by this time, for tanning was looked down upon by the Jews as an unclean profession, having to do with the skins of dead animals. To return to the central part of today's lesson: In Joppa lived a woman "named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas." Tabitha is a Hebrew word meaning 'gazelle'; the Greek word for that animal is and then acted on His word, come. given to the proper Source; af- known throughout all Joppa; and Lord." press of our busy lives, that un- founder of church women's sew- ing circles, often called 'Dorcas Societies." We now come to the question of why Peter was called from nearby Lydda after Dorcas' death. Was it to comfort the sorrowers, to take charge of the funeral, or did Dorcas' friends foresee that Peter might be able to restore Dorcas to life? The urgency of the summons seems to imply the latter, yet the hope or request is never voiced. Why? Because the faithful in Joppa must have realized that mira- cles were not performed by the will of the apostles but only by the will of God, acting through them. Thus Peter, when he does ar- rive, dismisses all the mourn- ers and kneels to pray, to learn God's will in the matter. As R. C. H. Lenski points out (in Peloubet's Select Notes, it was not Peter's faith that wrought the miracle, but the Lord's power. Peter merely submitted the case to the Lord, as it were, without question as to the out-| Moreover, Peter sees to it that the credit for this miracle is verwards the miracle "became many believed on the It is so easy to forget, in the The Raising of Tabitha by Peter. Dorcas was not wealthy, but she gave of herself, for she used her humble skill of sewing to help needy widows. After her death these poor widows showed Peter that the very clothes they were wearing were made b Dorcas. y The name of this humble, hard working woman who used what talent she had for Christian work has been immortalized in turned to the living to continue our good works; we will not I bered for the 'good works and almsdeeds' we planned to do some day, but only for those we actually ac-| complished. i It is also easy to lose touch] with the true spirit of charity. | We give money to drives for] worthy causes, but there is a danger, as Wilbur Smith points| out (Peloubet's Select Notes), that this charity will become mechanical.
