A mill for producing hot rolled sheets began operations in September, 1950, and a cold rol- ling mill for sheets followed, with a concurrent increase in the variety of finishes available. Success with the installations for sheets assisted the company to decide in 1952 to proceed with the installation of a completely integrated modern mill for producing stainless steel strip in coil form. This integrated equipment in- cluded the first continuous casting machine for steel in the Western Hemisphere, which began operation in November, 1954. His able direction of the stainless program has gone hand-in-hand with vigorous promotion of the world- famous Atlas lines of special- ty and tool steels, products which are marketed in 40 countries and which maintain the Welland company as the largest specialty steel opera- tion in the Commonwealth. Mr. De Young's frequent appeals for action to protect and improve the health of Canadian industry have earn- ed national attention.
