WHITBY and DISTRICT Whitby Bureau Office: 111 Dundas St. West Manager: Lloyd Robertson Tel. MO. 8-3703 NEW BUILDING BEING CONSIDERED THE WHITBY LAWN bowl- ing clubhouse which houses both the bowlers and the Whitby Tennis Club is badly CLUB members share the work in the upkeep of their courts. Membership this year has in need of repair. The club- house and property is owned by the Whitby Rotary Club who have decided that it from last year's 150 members Shown here are Marie Jacob- sen, 14, and Anne Kenny, 13, cutting weeds from the courts. | Rotary Discusses Two Club Sites The fate of the Whitby Lawn Bowling Club and the: Whitby Tennis Club will be decided by the Whitby Rotary Club at a near-future meeting. The Rotary Club who has own- ed the property since 1943 label- led it as "a thorn in the side" at their Tuesday noon dinner meeting. A 1951 report on the Rotary tennis - lawn bowling property was read at the meeting and stated that the property, border- ed by Brock, Green and Burns streets was purchased by the club from the Whitby Bowling and Tennis Club Limited who were badly in debt. The Rotary Club bought the property for the owing debt and have owned it since. Since thelyears ago and it was decided Members that he enjoyed Hr war, Rotary has maintained the property and has rented it to the tennis and bowling clubs. The yearly deficit was made up by the Rotary Club. Squabbles arose between the lawn bowling and tennis clubs because both used the same clubhouse and the tennis club for many years could not raise all of their rent. Rotary Club should keep su sidizing the tennis and bowling clubs in this town. At the Rotary meeting Charles | Stafford gave a summary of the | Tot Park situation. Included in the bylaw was the) controversial rezoning applica- tion from a paving campany located beside the Groveside Cemetery. The Whitby Minis- terial Association has protested against the rezoning of the adjacent land They claim the paving com- pany does not preserve the dignity of the burial , grounds. Council has pointed out to the Association that they can do nothing about the noise, since the land is owned by the company. A recommendation from plan- ning board is that Council re- zone . the land next to the cemetery but attach a restric- tion. The restriction would limit the company to its present operations. This restricting bylaw would have to be approved by the company. . Council felt by applying a restricting bylaw they would have more control over the land in the event the present com- pany moved out. The bylaw will be brought up fat the next meeting. She said that she laughed when Neale and Scott brought the two articles into her restaurant (but did not think it odd. | WHITBY SPORTS PARADE By GERRY BLAIR Whitby Abner's Essos unable to cope with the mixed-up offerings of Ronnie Jones, ace sling-shot hurler for Mount Zion Brooklin Concretes, bowed out of South Ontario County Softball league play-offs. Mount Zion required only the minimum two games to eliminate Abner's, thus qualifying for the finals against Markham Aces. Jones gave a masterful per- formance in Whitby on Monday night striking out 17. Wally Samanski gained the only key hit off Jones. Even at that, although the ball was well hit, leftfield- er Murray McDowell in moving over close to centre field to make a play, appeared to have a line on the ball but misjudged it's depth, and it soared over his head for a three-run homer.
