Stan Leonard Leads The Way, Five-Under-Par QUEBEC (CP) -- Burly Stan Leonard burned the rugged Royal Quebec golf course for a five-under-par 67 Friday for the first-round lead of the 1961 Ca- nadian Professional Golfers' As- sociation championship. The 46 - year - old Vancouver professional, fighting a strong wind under clear, blue skies, registered five birdies and played the other 18 holes of the 6,650-yard, par-72 course in par. His performance overshad- owed a brilliant comeback by Toronto's Al Balding, who birdied the 16th and 17th holes and picked up an eagle three on the 18th for a 69. Gerry Proulx of Montreal also fired a 69 to tie Balding for j second place. | Balding started out slowly, finishing the front nine in 37, two over par. But on the back nine he was a picture of perfec- tion and climaxed the rally with a 50-foot putt on the 18th. The second round of the 54-| 'Dependables Nip Tony's Squad 5-4 Dependable Caterers, league leaders in the Beaches Major Fastball League since the sea- son's opening, finally clinched top spot by defeating Oshawa Tony's 5-4, last night at Kew Beach in Toronto. Dependable's knocked off their nearest rival in true champion- ship form, breaking a 4-4 dead- lock with the winning run in the 8th inning. Lefthander Ross Golden, who needed relief help from Norm Mackie in the final inning, gain- ed credit for his 9th victory. Veteran Mel Meulemeester, Tony's starting pitcher was bombed in the first inning and Bev Smith, working in relief, was charged with the loss, his 3rd in 11 decisions. FIRST INNING RALLY Dependable's greeted Mel Meulemeester as a "country cousin' as the ageless southpaw faced just five batters, retiring {only one before being lifted. | With one out, Fraser Scott SPORTS CALENDAR ed to have Ross Golden on the ropes but he bore down in the clutch to quenich the rally. In the 8th, Dependable's sent the Queen City fans home happy, scoring the deciding tally. Lead-off batter Peter Con- acher doubled, stole third base and scored on Al Horner's sac- rifice fly Oshawa Tony's fought back again in the 9th with Freddie Eicher claiming a double after Jimmie Loreno had flied out. Dependable's playing coach "Red" Gilbert replaced Ross Golden with Normie Mackie,| who got Nick Mroczeck and Bev Smith out on easy plays, to end the rally and the game. TONY'S TALES: Fraser |Scott, Ronnie Anderson and | Peter Conacher paced Depend- |ables with two hits apiece while Al Horner was the winners' clutch hitter driving in three runs including the winner. Displaying a much stronger brand of ball than they present: ed on their home diamond in the first game, the Liftlock City Oilers scored a fun in the first inning to announce their serious intentions and but for a fine itching performance by Ron 'aylor, might have evened the series. Little opened the game with a single and Reid drew a walk. Taylor fanned G. Downer then Hoover grounded to Campbell, Gordon singled cleanly to score Reid then J. Garvey grounded to Campbell and Hoover was run down for the third out, between (doubled and when the throw to third was bobbled, Solomon scored. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' SOCCER FANS of this city and the neighboring district will flock to Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium here tonight in large numbers, to watch the big game between Windsor Caboto and Oshawa Hungaria. This is a sudden-death game, the semi-final match of the an- nual Ontario Cup competition and it will be a clash of giants -- neither of these two teams have tasted de- feat this season. The Windsor squad defeated Toronto Italia team in an exhibition game this summer, Osh- awa Hungaria knocked off Hamilton Imperials two weeks ago in the quarter-final. Hugh Morrow, of Tor- onto, a member of thé International Football Federation of Referees has been appointed to handle this contest, which gets under way at 7:30 o'clock. The Windsor Caboto Club, formed in 1949, sponsors the Windsor team (their club was named after the Venetian-born navi- gator Giovanni Cabote (John Cabot) who discovered Newfoundland. The Windsor team leads the Michigan- Ontario League and their roster boasts some former European and International stars. Oshawa Hungaria also has several players of equal calibre and experience. Hungaria favors a neat passing type of game and at a workout Thursday night at Cowan Park, they "brushed up" their "shooting boots". It they can finsh off their plays when in goal-range, with the same skill they display in mid-field, the Oshawa club should be able to win a berth in the Ontario Cup finals, with a victory over Windsor, here tonight. { DIAMOND DUST will be flying on a lot of dia- monds this afternoon and evening, with three Oshawa minor baseball teams commencing OBA playoff rounds and five Oshawa softball teams, three Port Perry teams and one from Pickering, all seeking the right to advance in OASA playdowns. The "Sports Calendar" gives a full list of the action, with the doubleheader at Alex- andra Park starting at 6:15 this evening, being the major attraction. On Monday, Oshawa Midgets will be in Peterborough but which team will go, will be decided this evening, Fernhill or Woodview. Also on Monday night, Brooklin Stevenson's Motors will meet Oshawa MacLean's Esso at Alexandra Park, second game of their OASA Intermediate "A" playoff round. The Woodview Metcalfe Realtors, Junior girls softball team, travel to Coxwell Stadium on Monday night for their PWSU playoff game with Toronto Imperials. Seems the game | | of Toronto | the first round of the Cana- | Duke Adams of Sault Ste.
