20 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, August 28, 1961 SUPER SALE BS SMAN ol Selling Canada To U.S. Tourists By JACK VAN DUSEN Canadian Press Staff Writer OTTAWA (CP) -- Alan Field probably has the biggest job in the country. He sells Canada. The grey-haired former film producer is director of the Canadian government travel bureau, a publicly - owned agency devoted to selling Can- ada as a tourist attractign. Said to be the only federal agency of its kind in the world, the bureau flcods the U.S. with tons of promotional material in "| a bid for some of the $2,000,000,- 4 000 that Americans spend on i travel and holidays outside their i country. "The United States is the big- gest tourist market in the world," says Mr. Fields. The Toronto-born tourist promotion specialist is using all the angles to sell his product on this mar- ket, where Canada faces com- petition from virtually every country in the world. Visiting Americans spent $371,000,000 in a record splurge in Canada 1n 1960, and Mr. Field expects the figure will be even higher this year, despite some unemployment in the U.S. Mr, Field, who left the Na- tional Film Board to join the bureau in 1950, uses films, photos, television, magazine and newspaper advertisements --and quick service--to attract tourists to Canada. Working closely with the prov- inces and transportation com- panies, the bureau, which has branch offices in New York City, Chicago and San Fran- cisco, placed $1,700,000 worth of advertising in United States magazines last year, scattered movie film in 579 libraries across the country, sent out 15,083 . photographs and hun- dreds of TV shorts. An estimated 6,073,687 per- sons watched free screenings of 5,600 films and another 60,000, id saw seven-minute glimpses of Canada on TV. FLOOD OF QUERIES Biggest job of the bureau is answering the flood of inquiries that resul! from the promotion. Last year 782,000 Americig: wrote asking about Canada. The total 'is expected to reach 850, 005 this year Each of the queries--coming at the rate of 22,000 a day in the peak season--is answered individually by a crew of trained travel counsellors, stenograph- ers and clerks. Crews, working in a mail room bigger than the average post office, whip out 8,000,000 pieces of literature a year. Queries like '"'where should I go on a honeymoon" or "where's the best place to fish" are answered with specially- prepared booklets that pour out in the peak period at the rate of 1% tons a day. The aids to the tourists are followed up by questionnaires to find out how the promotion paid off and what the Americans found wrong with Canada. Out of some 30,000 replies last year only ene per cent had any complaints, Of the 782,000 who wrote for information, 85, per cent did come to Canada. They stayed an average of 12 days and each person spent $168. EVERYONE CAN HELP Tourism is "a wonderful thing," beams the 51-year-old Mr. Field. He thinks more Canadians should be taught to realize this. The man on the street shouid be more helpful and service personnel should be given courses on how to handle the tourist. "The tourist industry can't sit back and wait for the govern- ment to do it all "There isn't a community in Canada that couldn't do some- thing to attract and hold more tourists. "We can do the big job of providing high-cost advertising, but the industry must make local plugs and provide ser- vices." BIG WHEELS BARRIE, Ont.
