SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1961 7 ao, ONTARIO TODAY Welt seam for high look, by By MARGARET NESS HE relaxed, barely fitted look is still with us for Fall. This was borne out at the showings of the New York Couture Group which I attended. "After all," says Larry Aldrich, "it was the consumer who confirmed the merits of the unfitted, relaxed silhouette when many pro- fessional fashion seers backed away from it in fear and uncertainty." You asked for it and you have it. However, fashion does ring a Fall change, with more grace in the skirts especially. Most tend to flare towards the hemline. Many late-day dresses break below the knee-cap or at the hem into flounces. Unpressed side folds provide a new broken line. In suits, low-placed front fullness often breaks just below a jacket. There is also advance fashion news in the raised waistlines shown sparingly by practically all the cou- turiers. It was very noticeable in the coat silhouette. The waistline is evi- dently due to move up, but certainly won't be a definite trend before next season. But as Rosalie Macrini says. it is not to be confused with the rather taut Empire line of past seasons. It is more relaxed, hugging the figure just below the bustline. - High-tied look in orange tweed coat. Scarf detail, by Originala. There is new fashion news* in color, too. Last winter's top white has not carried over, is seen mostly in evening gowns; the much-herald- ed magenta-for-Fall has not mater- ialized. It is important but has been outstripped by ginger. This would seem to be the popular shade with all the fashion houses. HE three favourite color ranges are (1) brown, mostly in the spice family, as curry, paprika, etc., but ranging from amber to walnut, (2) green, from vivid emerald to deep forest green, with much in- terest in bronzine (a mixture of brown with green) and olivine (a mixture of green with brown), and (3) berry tones, from strawberry to blackberry, including the magenta. A lot of red appeared, too, partic- ularly a brilliant Carnival Red with a bluish cast. Apricot was also a Pauline Trigere. favourite shade with many of the couturiers. All seemed to agree on the return of black for late -day dresses. Surprisingly, grey was shown frequently for evening wear. The startling color combinations of a few seasons ago were not in evidence but there were a number of unexpected duos, such as the pome- granate red and burnt orange chif- fon dress by Luis Estevez. Perhaps because he is a Cuban, Estevez likes these odd combinations, for he also showed a lot of blue and cocoa, as in a wool jersey suit with blue jacket and skirt, cocoa overblouse. He also most effectively combined shell pink with fawn brown. Probably the most fashion inter- est for Fall 1961 is in the coat sil- houette. The new forward jutting sleeve--almost a cape sleeve set far to the front --is very important. PAGE SEVENTEEN ) A B..ie C ycling D....c E.
