WIN 2-1 IN 9TH Oshawa Tony's came up with another "'story book" victory again last night at Alexandra Park, registering a key 2-1 vic- tory off Toronto Eddie Black's. § hurling Tony's The win gave Tony's a 1-0 lead in the Beaches Major Fastball League best-of-three semi-final play-off series. Last night's encounter was the last home appearance of Tony's this season. Seems, earlier in the year Tony's agreed that if they made the play-offs they would only get one home game, no matter how far they ad- vance. Tomorrow night Tony's could clean-up the series, when they journey to Kew Gardens to play Black's at 8:15 p.m. The remaining play-off games are all slated for Kew Gardens with the winner of the Tony's- Eddie Black's series meeting Dependable Caterers for the title. Dependable's drew a bye linto the finals, having finished {atop the loop during the regu- {lar campaign. | SMITH GETS VICTORY Rookie "Bev" Smith, the school teacher pitcher for Tony's, did a yeoman job in to the win. "Smiddy" scattered four hits and fanned seven batters en- :\route to the victory. Tony's Edge Black's 1st Of Semi-Finals After three scoreless innings, catcher Bobby Booth gave Tony's a 1-0 with a mammoth solo home run between the left and centre fielders. Eddie Black's bounced back in the 5th frame, scoring their lone tally. Des Devereaux rifled a hit back off Bev Smith's leg. Phil Waters was safe on another "come- backer" to Smith which he juggled. Johnny Mitchell bounced another hit to Smith which he fielded and relayed to Danny Price to force Dever- eaux. Dutch Van Lammers fan- ned, however Frank Crawford's bunt single loaded the bases. Stan Diamond then delivered with a single scoring Waters. Smith then got Normie "Rocky" Beaumount to ground out. FIREWORKS IN NINTH Going into the 9th fireworks exploded as Tony's broke the deadlock and came home vic- tors, after many unusual hap- penings. Freddie Etcher, play- ing with a bad leg, hobbled to Brent Oldfield lined out the centre but not deep enough to allow Knight to score. Danny Price, the next hitter, blasted a drive at shortstop Jake McLean, who hesitated trying to decide where to go on the play. This delay allowed Knight to race across the plate with the win- ning run, Bob Booth and Mel Meule- meester were the game's only players wv collect more than one hit. Both boys picked up a pair, TONY'S TALES -- Nick Mro- czeck and Jack "Red" MacDer- maid, two of Tony's top hitters, missed the game because of work. Both boys will be back in action tomorrow . . .
