20 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesdey, September 27, 196) Canadian's Hong Kong Memories OTTAWA (CP)--Jean Small, wife of a Canadian trade com- missioner, has fond memories of four years in Hong Kong. Those memories include a home halfway up the steep, fog- shrouded slopes of the Far East- ern city; haggling in pidgin English in the teeming markets daughters have been living in an apartment hotel while await- ing arrival of their teakwood furniture, being shipped to their house here A lively woman with short, curly, brown hair, blue eyes and a golden tan, Mrs. Small has a trace of British accent in her voice as a result of her Hong Kong years. THE CHINESE WAY Not one to disdain local cus- toms, Mrs. Small decided that the way to beat the heat in Hong Kong's humid summer months was to own a junk. This was used for trips to sea or for, picnic trips to nearby small oi holidaying in a Chinese|islands junk. The Smalls and their four The Smalls shared the Aie Lan--Love of the Waves--with two other families on weekend jaunts. It could accommodate 11 children and four adults. Housekeeping in a five-room Hong Kong flat had one out- standing problem -- the ever- present dampness which caused mould to grow on shoes, cloth- ing and bedding. Heated cup- boards and a dehumidifier were of some help. A native of London, Ont, where she graduated in honors English from the University of Western Ontario, Jean worked for an insurance company and then became an occupational therapist in a naval hospital in Newfoundland. She met John Small at a students' conference in St. Anne de Bellevue, Que., and married him in 1946 He is with the Far Eastern division of the external affairs department where he puts to good use his knowledge of the Chinese language. HAD BUSY LIFE Jean--who won't reveal her age and says it is unknown even to her husband--said life in Hong Kong was hectic even with three Chinese servants to helo. When not taking daughters Christine, 14, Margaret, 11, Kathleen, 8, and Patricia, 6, to school or ballet classes, music lessons, swimming, Brownies and various fund-raising con- certs, she would hunt bargains in the markets. Businessmen visiting the Far Bast got her to help them buy gifts such as brocade coats, Jap- anese pearls and delicate lace table cloths for their wives and families.
