He told the Guelph Liberal As- sociation Wednesday night the government also should drop the local option vote and license restaurants and resort operators meeting an objective standard in personnel, facilities and serv- ice He said the local option vote has not st the sale or con- sumption of alcoholic beverages in so-called "dry" areas but has driven the use of alcohol under- ground. He said a province-wide law the effect of turning honest men into bootleggers. "There is no good reason why a legitimate resort operator should be denied a licence to serve alcoholic beverages to his registered guests," he said. "It is time the government did away with this pointless non- sense and treated adults like citizens and not like lawbreak- ers." Mr. Wintermeyer said gov- {ernment policy starts from the| proposition that liquor is evil in itself. "It does not differentiate be- tween the normal use of liquor | and the abuse of liquor," he is preferable to a patchwork of local options. ALCOHOLISM CAUSE "All too often our present li- quor laws prohibit the serving). of food with aléeoholic bev- erages," said Mr. Wintermeyer. "This is contrary to all the rules governing the moderate use of alcohol." He said the present restric- tions toward licensing tourist outfittefs and resort owners has added. Number Of Male | | Deaths Doubled TORONTO (CP) -- A doubl- ing of male deaths from lung cancer in Toronto during the last 20 years was reported to the Toronto board of health Wednesday by Dr. A. R. J. Boyd, medical officer of health. There had been no increase| in the number of female deaths | from the disease in the same period. During 1939-40-41, 200 men and | 54 women were reported to have died in the city of cancer of the respiratory system, he said. For 1958-59-60 the figures were 534 men and 57 women. Dr. Boyd said city males have from two to four times the death rate of rural males and there was no doubt of the pos- sible harmful effects of air pol- lution. However, he found the difference betwzen the rates for| men and women "inexplicable." | PLAN SHOW | WOODSTOCK, Ont.
