8 Friday, January 12, 2024brooklintowncrier.com Your own fresh vegetables are easy to grow and along the way you may save a little money and get great outdoor exercise. Burns Church is sponsoring a series of seminars designed to help even the most novice gardener to successfully grow an amazing harvest from just a small space in your back yard or you can be innovative and use the front yard. There will also be lots of information to help active gardeners upgrade their skills. Come and enjoy four informative and entertaining seminars that will help you choose the best ways to grow your favourite vegetables. We'll start with planning, timing, seed starting, variety choices and sources on February 13th, then move on to garden design, preparing the soil, starting later crop seeds and growing on your little seedlings on March 19th. By April 16th we will start to look at the wide range of cool season crops that can be planted that month and how to do that successfully along with styles and types of gardens from containers to raised beds and then finishing up on May 7th with all the techniques for planting and nurturing the main season vegetables. We also learn how to properly water and fertilize and care for them and then look ahead to harvesting and cooking. Along the way we will have a peek at some of the problems such as bugs and diseases, learning how to spot them and easy ways to deal with them. You might just get some answers to other gardening questions along the way. These seminars will be led by well-known local horticultural guru Ken Brown who has been feeding his family from his own garden for 40+ years. www.gardening-enjoyed.com The seminars will be held at Burns Church 7:00 -8:00 p.m. in the village of Ashburn at a cost of $50 for the entire series. Gardening should be a family affair so come as a family for $75 and your partners and any kids who are interested can join the seminars and the church will provide childcare for the younger ones. Kids love to eat the vegetables they have helped to grow. Market expected to return to 'near normal' In what some real estate experts are calling 'the great readjustment,' the market is expected to return to 'near normal' this year. After years of unprecedented highs and lows, that should leave many buyers and sellers breathing a collective sigh of relief. The Bank of Canada's (BoC) interest rate hikes caught up to home- buyers last year, tightening affordability and leaving many prospective buyers on the sidelines. Sales slowed as a result. But now that inflation is dropping, many economists predict interest rates will start to drop in mid- to late 2024. What does that mean for the housing market? One real estate company believes buyers who returned to the sidelines amid ris- ing interest rates - including those moving up and those downsizing - will remain on the sidelines unless current housing prices drop because they'd prefer to hold onto their current homes rather than risk higher mortgage payments. Prices have already started to drop from last summer's peak, with the national average home price in October 2023 decreasing for the fourth consecutive month to $731,100, that real estate company reports. Though lower sales will help bring prices down in most areas, demand for family homes in prime locations will remain competitive, it warns. Home prices across the country are currently trending downwards, but that's not uncommon during the winter months. Generally, prices begin to edge upwards before the beginning of the spring market. That real estate company warns the market could turn on a dime: once the market hits bottom and prices start to climb, buyers will race to get back into the market before prices peak once more. Here in Durham Region, 540 houses exchanged hands in November 2023. While that's down slightly from 588 the previous month, the Central Lakes Association of Realtors says the number underscores the "continued demand" for real estate. The average selling price for all home types in November was $883,115. That's down month-overmonth from the average home price of $931,500. Another real estate company, meanwhile, is predicting the aggregate price of a home in Canada will increase 5.5 per cent year over year to $843,684 in the fourth quarter of 2024. The median price of a single-family detached property will increase six per cent to about $879,000, while a condo- minium will increase five per cent to about $616,140. In the Greater Toronto Area, the aggregate price of a home in the fourth quarter of 2024 is forecast to increase six per cent year over year to $1.198 million. The median price of a single-family detached property in the same period is expected to rise seven per cent to roughly $1.482 million, while the median price of a con- dominium is forecast to increase five per cent to about $755,000.
