LETTERS »" EDITOR Impressed By Service To+The Publisher, Port Perry Star: Port Perry, Ontario. Have you ever been indecisive about attending an event due to inclement weather? | was last evening, but am so grateful | decided it was only weather. The ex- perience was so uplifting and encouraging | shall not ever forget it. As our family sat huddled in the car waiting for the gusts of wind, rain and hail to subside enough to make the 100 yd. dash to the service being held in the 110 year old Head church, Scugog Island, it was almost as if the elements were quieting us, in spite of all their fury. As if they were saying, see, | am still in control. It appeared to me to be a time of preparation, of sit- ting quietly in withdrawal from the turmoil of each of Faeeu Tei ' me ' > L @ glorious evening of climax to a we came face to face with our heritage, spititual, phy- sical and cultural. Not having any ancestral settlers in the area and yet being so impressed myself, | am sure that those that are kin to the type of settler that made the area what it is to-day must have been bursting, with pride. As our beloved Rev. Braham expressed it so well, to-day is a time for optimism, not pessimisim. True we have not been promised all will go well every day( 2 Peter 3:10) NEVERTHELESS' Fear thou not, For | am with Thee, for | am Thy God, | will strengthen Thee. Not escape from life, but strength to meet each situation. As | sat in that 110 year old church | kept thinking, who are we trying to fool? With our closing of churchs (sometimes necessary to be realistic) our trying to manage our own lives, in our own strenght. Are you succeeding? I'm not. If our forefathers, who never dream- ed of the luxuries we consider necessities, needed that building and others like it and what it stood for, and no doubt sacrificed that it might be a reality, are we a dif- ferent breed? | also Was sure that it was not only money that made the difference, it was dedicated, committed people. People who knew how to RECEIVE love, through their God, and hence able to GIVE love to all. | cannot even carry a tune, but | was raising my voice in praise and thanksgiving and fellowship, like all who were there. | have not heard such singing for a long time. | am sure that grand old roof will need a few more patches after last night. Upon returning home, | found myself just sitting and thinking. How often do we take time to do this? THINK? | was so glad | had the priviledge of being a part of thet service, of reflecting upon the past, present and where was | going from Here? Many thanks to Mr. Bill Brock and his Committee; Mrs. Catherine Martyn who taught her crafts so patient- ly and willingly and to Almighty God who allowed us this very special evening. Let us pick up the challenge given to us last night, in what-ever area we serve, and be Christian optimists. (Mrs.) Jeanne Elliot.
