Cartwright ratepayers filled] the Township Hall, Blackstock last Friday night at a meeting to nominate candidates for! the positions of reeve, deputy reeve and councillors for the next term. Interest in municipal pol- itics proved not to have det- eriorated, even with the much talked about regional govern- ment, as nearly 100 township residents attended the meet- ing. Reeve Lawrence Maicoim was returned by acclamation to his post, whilé an election for deputy reeve and coun- cillors will take place Monday, December 7. Deputy Reeve Gordon G& tins will be challenged at the polls this year by a three year veteran on council, Vern Asselstine. | Donald Frew and Norman Mairs, present council mem- bers will seek another term on council, while three new candidates, Osmond Wright, Norman Tennyson and Harvey Graham will also contend for the three positions available. Lawrence Malcolm was) first to speak and thanked everyone for their confidence in him and said it was good to see interest at this nomina- tion meeting Mr. Malcolm accepted his | nomination and said that he thoroughly enjoyed his work "The job does not lack for| excitement and it calls for a lot of diplomacy, tact and bull-dog persistence at times," he said. After his report on the past two years, Mr. Malcolm made quite apparent his con-| cern about the coming region al government "The pressure of amalga mation is mounting,"' he said. | "We may be able to stay as we are for awhile, but just for [For Deputy, Councillors awhile. Our Council's stand has been that we want to stay in this eastern area until the facts prove we should do otherwise. I wouldn't want to hang on the coat-tails of anot- her municipality, but one of the facts is that we will have to remain in the same region as Darlington and Bowman- ville. It would be nearly im- possible to do otherwise. How- ever, we have close ties and are dependent on Port Perry for High School, Hospital, arena and some fire protection," he said. : Mr. Malcolm said that if staying in the eastern region means amalgamation with Mapvers, Cavan, Millbrook and South Monaghan, that he could not personally see how it large spread out municipality with very little in common except the geography of being side by side,"' he said. "A year ago the general feeling in this township about remaining in an eastern region would have been YES, I am sure, he said, but today I would not be sure at all." Mr. Malcolm said that regi onal government was one of the main issues facing the new council and he hoped more of the township residents would relay their thoughts so council can be sure of act ing in accordance with their wishes. Deputy reeve, Gordon Get tins then gave his report on his term in council, with Vern Asseistine, Donald Frew and Norman Mairs also giving reports on the committies they served Osmond Wright, Norman Tennyson and Harvey Graham all thanked their nominees for the opportusity of being able to run fer council before meeting was thrown open to questions from the floor.
