Out of the shadows of the past, back through the twilight of the years. Their lives and deeds shine through to help us overcome our present fears. These are our forefathers -- the people that made ' Port Perry what it is today. They carved farms out of % the wilderness, built roads, stores, schools and churches. bee. They put steamships on Lake Scugog and brought in the 1s railway and in 1871, the community became an incorp- 'sd orated village. Village and inhabitants prospered and grew, but , disaster struck in 1883 and'84 when two great fires "Ws raged through the village burning it to the ground. Undaunted they stayed and re-built, and on the ruins of (f the previous buildings, Port Perry business section stands today, They enterod the twentieth century, and in this new era, they again experienced prosperity, but tragedy struck again on two occasions with two destructive World Wars in 1914 - 18 and 1939 - 45, when many of Port Perry's sons did not return. Since then Port Perry has experienced new growth with an increase in population. Over the last twenty six- years has come new schools, stores and industries, a new hospital and arena, and Port Perry is still growing. The people on the front page represent some of the era's Port Perry has passed through. These people are only a few of the many who have been involved with the distant and near history of Port Perry. 1821 Reuben Crandell who 150 years ago was the first settier in Port Perry area. 1847 Peter Perry, Port Perry's namesake, was instru- mental in building Port Perry's first store and putting steamships on Lake Scugog. 1871 Jos. Bigelow, Port Perry's first reeve, was also hi the force behind the coming of Port Perry's first railway. 1895 Daniel David Palmer, born in Port Perry, he was the father of chiropractics. 1907 Samuel Farmer, first editor of the Port Perry Star. 1908 Dr. Robert Archer, who had the first automobile in Port Perry. 1914 Ted Jackson, veteran of World War 1. 1945 R. McNenly, Veteran of World War 11. 1957 - 68 J. J. Gibson, who was Reeve for 11 years and Warden of the Ontario County. 1971 Robert Kenny, the present Reeve of Port Perry. 1971 P.
