We had honestly expected some reaction from the Star readers to the decision of the Federal Government to demolish the 60 year old building, housing the Post Office. At least, in a layman's opinion it appears the building is still in sound condition and seems to deserve e better destiny than destruction. A far better destiny, We believe, would be to keep the landmark standing and corivert the building to a fut- ure Municipal Building. The Post Office does not necess- arily have to be located on Queen Street, and the cost of demolishing the present Post Office would greatly ex- ceed the demolition of the Municipal Building, on Perry Street where we suggest the new Federe! building could be erected. The modern type of building planned for the present Post Office site, will certainly not blend in with the pre- sent architecture on Queen Street, as well as the building of today. Why is it that we are so eager and willing to destroy the early architecture of this nation. Granted, 60 years is not a very old building, but Canada as 2 nation isn't old either and if looked after, the building is well enough constructed to at least survive another 60 years, or more. As far as can be determined at this stage, the new building will not give too much extra space, but will instead, no doubt be more practical, with modern facilities, etc. When the Federal Government has made a decision, it most likely have no intention of changing it and the present Post Office is, we fear, doomed. , However, for what it's worth, we felt strongly enough about the question to state our opinion. Perhaps some of our readers have a view on the subiect and if so, the Star weicomes letters to the editor. In the event the decision made is the only alternative, and there is no possible chance of savingthe building, it would also be interesting to have the authorities in charge comment on' the subject.
