Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1847, he sailed with his family across the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for 20 years. His biography, drawn from transcriptions of the documents, supplemented by online research, describes wrecks, storms, mutinies, family tragedies and even a confrontation with a Chilean warship in 1891. He turned to mining for gold near Princeton, British Columbia in the 1890s. He lost his life in the Columbia River in 1905. Captain Scott's Scrapbook is the story of unravelling the truth and fiction to discover and write about his persistence and resilience, overcoming challenges while remaining, by all accounts, a genial companion and masterful storyteller.
