About 1,000 persons went to Whitby wharf on Saturday (June 19) to witness the arrival of the Garden City with the gallant boys of the 34th. It was a fine sight to see the steamer coming in, leaving its lines of red coats, and the disembarkation of the men and their equipment was an interesting spectacle. The faces of the volunteers were browned and most of them had scaly noses where the skin had been completely burnt off. The removal of the horses and boxes was only the work of a minute or two. Capt. Wm. Smith had a damaged eye, the result of a bayonet accident. It was a miraculous thing that the optic was not destroyed.
