Willson, was the first chapter te be formed in Osh- @wa. At the original meeting, held September 21, 1949, the executive officers chosen were Mrs. S. A. Willson, regent; Mrs. R. J. Ross, ist vice-regent; Mrs. Hayden Macdonald, 2nd vice-regent; Mrs. Edward Bind, secretary; Mrs. J. E. Rundle, treasurer; Mrs. J. A. Turpin, educational secretary; Mrs. D. E. Daniels, Echoes secretary; Mrs. W. A. Holland, standard bearer. From a charter men- bership of 15 members, the chapter has grown and now totals 75 young married women. Because the chapter was or- ganized in tne "Golden Jubilee Year" of IODE, it chose "'Gold- en Jubilee' as its name. The motto of the chapter is "Tona- kela", an Indian name which means "Others First'. The gavel ot the chapter was presented by Mr. Hayden Mac- donald, and its standard, a silk- en Union Jack, was presented by Mr. A. G Storie. The officers of the chapter for 1961 are as follows: Regent, Mrs Edward Bind; ist vice- regent, Mrs. W. D. Burns; bnd vice-regent, Mrs. John Vivash (Mrs. H. A. Ward-Whate for first half of 1961); secretary, Mrs. A. W. Banfield; treasurer, Mrs. H. W. Neil; educational secretary, Mrs. John Vivash; standard bearer, Mrs. A. R. Garrett; services, at home and abroad secrctary, Mrs. L. V. Walker; membership secretary, Mrs. P. H. Phillips. Conveners -- Empire and world affairs, Mrs. D. A. Brown; public relations, Mrs. W. H. Each meeting features a guest speaker, an educational film or a brief talk te stimulate inter- -- IODE work or world af- The IODE has a membership from the Yukon to Newfount- jand, of approximately 532,000 women in 936 chapters. It fos- ters unity within the Common- wealth and endeavors to show its patriotism through service, in its various departments. More than a quarter of a mil- fion dollars is spent each year on the work of the educational department in scho'arships, bursaries, grants assisting Ca- nadian schools and adopted schools in the West Indies, and in special educational commun- ity work. First and Second War Memorial Furds provide burs- aries in Canadian Universities for children of war veterans, and scholarships, open to stu- dents in Canada, are awarded in British Universities (Over- seas) for post graduate studies. A half a million dollars is spent annualty in Canada and overseas in welfare work and in relief supplies shipped to Europe, Africa, Korea and the West Indies. Commonwealth Relations de- partment promotes friendship among the nations of the Com- monwealth by generous dona- tions te their medical and edu- cational activities and by bring- ing Commonwealth students to Canadian Universities for post- graduate studies. The chapter also holds an annual birthday party, with | special entertainment, for the Golden Age Club. Representatives attend meet- ings of the Canadian Associa- tion of Consumers, Red Cress, Women's Welfare League, Civil Defence, UNICEF, Hospital Auxiliary, Hillsdale Maner and Community Rehabilitation and |!
