(CP)-- Nickel-producing capacity of the free world, exclusive of Cuba, reached a new high of 625,- 000,000 pound: annually in 1961, says Henry . Wingate, chair- man of International Nickel Company of Canada Ltd., in a "~ of the industry, iS Was an increase of abo 95,000,000 pounds over 1960 oa exceeded 1961 consumption by 125,000,000 pounds. In addition, Cuban nickel is being offered for sale in Europe. "Developments in Cuba," Mr, Wingate adds, "make it diffi. cult to comment on nickel oper- ations there, but nickel in the form of nickel oxide is cur- rently been produced. "In 1959 facilities capable of producing 50,000,000 Pounds of nickel annually were available in Cuba and a new operation based on facilities in Cuba and 2 refinery in Louisiana with ca- pacity to produce another 50,- 000,000 pounds was about com- plete." UPTURN TO CONTINUE _ Mr. Winga increased supplies made avai- lable in the last several years has been an impetus toward ex- panded markets, and "we con- template that the gradual up- ward trend in the use of nickel will continue," Canadian operations constitute more than three - quarters of free-world capacity. Consumption in 1961 was ap- proximately the same as the record 503,000,000 pounds of 1960 and compares with 435,000,000 pounds in 1959. International Nickel's own 1961 deliveries were at a new high. With co-operation of Canadian producers about 45,000,000 pounds of surplus nickel from the United States government's Defence Procurement Act in- ventory and ffom_ supplies scheduled for shipment to the U.S. government under contract, was disposed of to the nickel trade, International Nickel in 1961 brought into production its new te said the greatly ie Nickel Producing - High © project at Thompson, Man., with capacity exceeding 75,000;- 000 pounds yearly to bring the company's to.al capacity 'rom Manitoba and Ontario's Sudbury district to more than 385,000,- 000 pounds. ' Other Canadian producers in- « clude Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd., in the Sudbury area, whose capacity increased in 1961 by about 5,000,000 pounds to 70,000,000; and Sherritt Gor- don Mines Ltd., with a' mine in Manitoba and a refinery near Edmonton, and a capacity of about 25,000,000 pounds. : Other major producers are So- ciete Le Nickel, of France, with deposits in New Caledonia, more than 50,000,000 pounds; United States operations, mainly those of Hanna Mining Company, Rid- dle, Oregon, 23,000,000; and Jap- anese refiners, about 45,000,000. United States consumption im- proved over 1960, reaching its highest level in the latter part of the year. Major 1961 research develop- ments, Mr. Wingate said, in- clude a series of new ultra-high- strength steels, containing 18- to 25-per-cent nickel, with "'a com- bination of properties never be- fore realized in other alloy steels."
