BYNG AVENUE PENTECOSTAL CHURCH Pastor REV. G. A. CARROLL 'Ne BIBLE LESSON | Lord for 40 days and 40 nights, as he did one other time. There is an interesting parallel here with the time Jesus spent in the ments to Moses. (See Matthew 5:1-20). In His famous Sermon on the Mount (again the impor- tant symbolism of the moun- SCIENTIFIC CLERIC William Conybeare, the noted English gevlogist who died in 1857, was also a clergyman and Moses Receives Laws From God By N. SPEER JONES In the first quarter of the year 1962 we shall be studying the general topic, Jesus and the Ten Commandments. The opening lesson, quite na- turally, introduces the subject matter, placing the Ten Com- mandments in their historical setting and pointing up their re- lationship to Christ and His teachings for us, His followers. Actually, the first record we have of the Ten Command- ments is not included in today's lesson. God's laws have already been given to the Israelites in Exodus 20, at the very begin- ning of their sojourn at Sinai, whence God has led them after their flight from Egypt. Then God called Moses up to the top of hallowed Mt. Sinai, while the rest of the Israelites waited at the foot, and in a voice of thunder spoke the Ten Commandments for the first time. WRITES ON STONE In Exodus 24:12, God prom- ised Moses that He would write Sinai with God, receiving the tablets, the Israelites whom God and Moses have been striving so hard to enlighten become restless for their old unholy way of life. The calf of gold fashioned by Aaron in response to their al mand for '"'a graven image" is} a personification, as it were, of their desire for the easy way out -- a primitive religion de-| manding only ritualistic observ-} ance. It does not demand, as Judaism and Christianity do, a training of the soul, an inward ritual which transforms the in-! dividual. wilderness. The parallel is seen again in Moses' transfiguration from speaking with the Lord (Exo- dus 34:29-35), and Christ's trans- figuration on another mountain top in God's presence (Mat- thew 17:1-13, Luke 0:28-36 etc.) Nearly 40 years after God gave Moses the laws at Mt.| Sinai, Moses reviews the inci- dent for his people, then on the plains of Moab.
