A look in the murky crystal bail discloses it will be one of the more-memorable years of ioaern times, a mixture of na- tioua, prosperity and interna- tional puzzlement. Most people will be living more, but maybe wondering whether they are enjoying it Jess. Yet everybody--everybody except wives reaching 40--will find something to be cheerful about during 1962. Here are a few fanciful pre- dictions that may come true during the present year: The United States will shoot a man into orbit and the Rus- sians will immediately orbit a besutiful female spy to keep an eye on him. The United Nations will seek to solve its financial woes by having itself listed on the' stock exchanges of New York, Lon- den, Paris, Rome, Bonn and Tokyo. Shares will be sold se- eretely to the Russian public by stock and bond salesmen para- chv'ted into Siberia by the West- ern Allies, Prime Minister Nehru will ac- cept contributioris from wealthy Fortuguese inhabitants of Goa for a vast new slum clearance program in India. Pantomime Dying Out In Britain of traditional pantomime are the transformation scene, a lush spectacular montage of trick effects; animals played by louse - limbed actors -- espe- cially the pantomime horse-- and characters representing guod and evil. Over the years, plots have evolved from an assortment of nuisery tales, but the most pop- ular boil down to a basic five-- Cinacrella, Dick Whittington, Mother Goose, Alladin and Puss in Boots. Though it has been played in Canada and Australia, panto- mime has been called a "'pe- culiarly British' institution. Now, it seems, Aladdin's won- derfu: lamp has lost its lustre on Shaftesbury Avenue; pump- kin coaches are out of fashion in Piccadilly. are deficient in the North American diet. Vanadium inhibits the beay's manufacture of choles- teicl It apparently also re- duces the amount of choles- tero} in skin and arteries, may slow atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries and may reduce the incidence of galistones. Zine helps reduce skin troubles, aids healing and bone structure. OLD BAD EYE A Bermuda spiny lobster with a bad eye was discov- ered by chance--and passed on to scientists. It may offer some clues to nerves and their growth. Arter its eye was injured, the lobster grew a sort of an- tenia or auxiliary eyve--and the nerves grew back from from infancy. One such due is body tem- yperaiure. When you've estab- lished in your mind when you yaut to wake up, the mind waits for the body tempera- ture associated with that num- ber of hours or the depth of sleep. Then it fires a "wake up' alarm to the wakeful- thus appendage to connect up with the correct brain cells. By DOUG MARSHALL LONDON (CP)--When 'Frant: Richards died Christmas Evc he left behind the best-lovec lump of fat in English literature since Shakespeare created Fal- staff. Richards, whose real name was Charles Hamilton, spent 60 years writing about Billy Bunter and Greyfriars school--a school- boy character and an institu- tion that have become part of British folklore. Few Canadians may have heard of Bunter, ranked by some critics with Sherlock Holmes and Oliver Twist. But most will be familiar with the legend he sustains--the whining cad of all stories about boys' schools. Grotesquely fat, insatiably greedy, inherently a liar, a coward and a cheat, Bunter is the antithesis of all the virtues usually associated, with Tom Brown, Stalky and company and the fifth form at St. Dom- inic's. There is a certain timeless quality about Bunter. He al- ways appears wearing bulging checkered trousers, blazer, spotted bow tie, owl like pince-nez and an _ expression constantly shifting from glut- tonous glee to cringing terror. As he skulks through Grey- friars, readers are transported to a historical limbo -- some- where between Waterloo and the Battle of Britain--which re- mains untouched by war, and the passage of time. IN SAME GRADE For more than 50 years Bun- ter has remained entrenched in Richards' Loved By Englis Bunter aeonweoed * the Remove, a curious plateau in the English public school steucture that is a little higher than tke third form but a little lower than the fourh. 4 Nicknamed the Owl of the Re- | move, his prime preoccupations are food and the procuring of money. against the postal order that is always on the point of arriving but never does. Richards first brought Bunter to life in a boys' magazaine in 1899. He was 2" "> > cess and from 1908 on his mal adventures wi. .- ss Mr. Quelch, and _higher-priti- cipled friends like Harry Whar- ton, filled the pages of the Magnet and Gem boys' maga- zines. ' Richards churned out 25,000 words:a week and wrote so many books, plays and maga- zine stories that he was often accused of using a team of writ- ers. After the Second World War killed both Magnet and Gem, television gave Bunter a new lease of life and a Bunter stage play became a Christmas tra- dition. The latest, Billy Bunter Shipwrecked, opened the week Richards died. Richards, 86, never married. "I have a family on my type- writer," he once said. "Bunter and his friends at Greyfriars school now are more real to me than real people."
