Adding Machine Takes Command NEW YORK (AP)--Using a microphone, a young engineer spoke to a baby machine, Hie gave it a series of num- bers, and asked the machine to add them up. Clicking along merrily with flashing lights, it came up with the correct an- swet, The machine, called Shoebox because it's only about that size, can mize 16 separate Enghsh words -- the 10 digits from zero through nine, and six verbal commands such as "pius," "minus," or '"'total." Connected with an adding ma- chine, it can carry out arith- metical problems. Tne device was, demonstrated by the Advanced Systems De- velopment Division of Interna- tionai Business Machines Cor: poration, with William C, Dersch, 37, a principal engineer in its construction, giving it the verbal commands. Shoebox uses a different sys- tem of recognizing spoken woids than do other machines winch have been designed to recognize words, This principle is known technically as phase information, derived from phy- sical and mathematical analy- sis of sounds. The new approach, officials seid, might ultimately be de- veloped for applications in ma- enines with 1,000- to 10,000-word vocabularies which could type out spoken words, reproduce sick market quotations, tabu- iate inventories, or customers' orders, or in teaching machines or possibly translation ma- chines. All such possibilities are still far in the future. The device calls for pro- nouncing its 16 words with Webster dictionary pronuncia- tioys, But it ~still recognizes words regardless of the speed with which the words are said, ard within reasonable limits of accents and inflections. It doesn't listen to women, thuugh, unless the -woman is about equal in size in head and throat structure to a man, Dersch said. The reason for this is that men and women usually differ in size of larynx and the ar- 1angement of resonant cavities in the throat which produce vuwel and consonant sounds in a particular phasing. Men's voices carry more information through the phasing of sounds. Right now, Shoebox does best when adjusted to the vocal characteristics of one speaker. Berlin Closure Affects Stores By "ETER TURNER WEST BERLIN (Reuters) -- More than 1,000 West Berlin shopkeepers and small busi- nessmcn face bankruptcy be- cause of the Berlin. border clos- ure which deprived them of their Hast Berlin customers. Tne city government hopes soon to-help them apply for aid from: the West Berlin govern- ment, The shops affected are either along the 25-mile border within East Berlin, now virtually sealed off by concrete walls and barbed-wire fence, or around stations of the Kast German-run elevated railway, effectively boycotted by West Berliners as a protest against the wall. Before Aug. 13, when the Corauunists shut the border, thousands of East Germans and East Berliners came into West Berlin daily to buy goods un- available in the eastern sector. MANY ITEMS Such goods included coffee an? cigarettes, seamless ny- lons, non-political books and medicines or simple objects such as nails, screws, coat hangvrs and tap washers which were unobtainable in the East. East German Communist chief Walter Ulbricht said last June that about 3,500,000 east marks were being taken out of the country every year for shopping in the West. The border shops now: have only scant custom, though a sort of tourist trade has grown 2 alongside the wall. Grey- haired men, staring at the bor- der, buy a mid-day sausage. Tight-lipped women, waiting to wave to relatives or friends across the wall; buy an occa- siona' cup of coffee. Border movie theatres which did a roaring trade have closed down completely, They had been gubsidized for years to of- fer East Germans non-Commu- nist films at low cost.
