Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' Hawks | By LAURENT CHIASSON Canadian Press Staff Writer REVENGE? Some of thé oldtimers among the Peterborough sporting fraternity, those who closely fol- lowed their inter-city competitions in recent years, are probably chortling these days. For years, Oshawa's minor hockey teams, the representatives from the local "City League", could be counted on to survive any early rounds they might be drawn against in the Liftlock City and of course, in softball ranks, until]. the advent of Ray Judd -- Oshawa teams almost always made a two-bite snack of any Peterborough opposition in playoff draws. But in Minor hockey these days, things are different. The Liftlock City teams knocked off a couple of our Osh- awa representatives last year. This year, they just may make a clean sweep. Oshawa Pee Wees, Bantams, Midg- ets and Juveniles were all drawn against Peterborough in their first rounds of Ontario Minor playdowns. As of last night, we have only the Oshawa Juveniles left -- and they have to win the third and deciding game in Peterborough on Saturday early evening (five o'clock) or it will have been a very short season for Oshawa's City League teams in Ontario playdowns. The Pee Wees, Bantams and Midgets have all been wiped out in two-straight games, Bantams the latest to get the axe -- it fell for them last night. BRITISH CONSOLS "eights" for the right to repre- sent Southern Ontario in the annual Macdonald "Brier" at Kitchener next month, got under way yesterday at Owen Sound and the two favorites, Murray Roberts and his Unionville rink and Bayne Secord from Tam O'Shan- ter, both won their two games yesterday -- to further tee up the tension and excitement for this afternoon's 2:30 o'clock draw -- when they will clash. Roberts 'and his mates beat out Joe Gurowka and the strong Dixie rink in a very close 6-5 game yesterday and at this distance, it would appear that Gurowka is the only one, other than Roberts, who may be able to stop Secord end his "Tams". If Roberts takes Secord this afternoon then it could be all over but the shouting -- although in an eight-team round-robin playoff, anything can happen in the way of an upset or surprise. QUICK QUIPS:--Peter Snell of New Zealand ran 1 mile in 3:56.8, which is 2.4 seconds slower than his own world record made two weeks ago but still among the best half-dozen times ever recorded .. . DAVIS CUP tennis draw for the 1962 North American Zone, made yesterday, brings Canada against United States in the first round . . . SASKATCHEWAN schoolboys are still undefeated (at the time of writing) in the Canadian schoolboys curling championships at Halifax although New Brunswick scared 'em silly in a 5-4 squeaker yes- terday. Ontario's representatives have won only one game in a very ordinary showing. At this. point, it looks as if 1961 champion British Columbia boys or Man- itoba (who meet today) may be able to give the Sask. lads a tussle and if Manitoba beats Saskatchewan, there could be a tie developed for first place.
