WHITBY And DISTRICT | Whitby's Member By GORDON MITCHELL The current Easter Seals " campaign in Whitby has as its 4 symbol Michael Reynolds who as "Timmy" personifies the crippled child. Eleven year old Michael is a victim of muscu- lar dystrophy which now con- fides him to a wheelc chair. Michael was once able to go to school but as the disease has progressed he has had to give up his formal education. He undertook Ontario Depart-|! ment of Education correspon- dence course supervised by his mother, but as there are four younger children in the family it was discovered that the course was too much to under- take. JOINS CUBS Last year Michael was also "Timmy" and as a result of the Whitby Rotary Club's inter- est in the boy he became a ™ member of the Third Whitby Cub Pack of All Saints' Anglican Church. Mrs. Reynolds de- scribes the affect the Cubs have had on her son as "amazing". She says, "he has lost all shyness he ever had and has started to study in an effort to ' bring himself up to the other i MICHAEL, REYNOLDS, WHITBY'S TIMMY boys' level." Michael is aided in his efforts by his younger brothers and sis- ters. Timmy Of Cubs Under the auspices of the Whitby Rotary Club Michael went to a summer camp at Collingwood where he took part in the many activities arranged for handicapped children. How- ever this year will see him at the camp held for the Cubs. There will be no difficulty at all in this arrangement as he is now seen, "just one of the pack", as his mother describes In telling of his evenins spent with the Cubs, Michael en- thusiastically talks of the many activities in which he takes part. He is also fond of swimming, and frequently goes to Picker- ing where swimming lessons are given for disabled children. As the disease has taken its course Michael has gradually lost many of the talents that luckier people take for granted. Just now he is able to wash himself but can do nothing else without the help of his mother. Mrs. Reynolds says, "'he is a boy who has so much to com- plain of but he never does com- plain'. He was given an award by the Cub Pack as a Cub who does not give into him- self. The award was in the form of dishes he can use at the summer camp. * LOST AND FOUND "If you have to get lost, find a policeman!" Louis Dubeau, 3, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hec- tor Dubeau, 801 Byron street north, Whitby, was found wan- dering near Chestnut and Brock street at 12.25 p.m. Friday by PC James Wilson. Louis never said a word for the next two hours and 20 min- utes, but he also never left PC Wilson's 'side. After all, not every boy gets a pair of real handcuffs and a police whis- tle to play with. Louis was re- turned to his father at 2.55 p.m. when the father stopped the cruiser to ascertain whe- ther they had any lost boys. --Oshawa Times Photo £4 | , \ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Soturday, Merch 24, 1962 5 TICATS OUTSKATE ARGOS TORONTO (CP) -- Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Big Four Foot- ball League Friday night re- tained the Stanley Saucer by de- feating Toronto Argonauts 7-4 in a game that occasionally resem- bled hockey.
