30 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, April 25, 1962 Family Of 20, Man Homeless, Moneyless ST. FRANCOIS, (CP)--' Heliodore Cyr, oso and moneyless 55-year-old father of 20, is determined to rebuild his two-story 1l-room farmhouse, destroyed by fire last month in this northwestern New Bruns- wick community. The fire left Mr. and Mrs. Cyr and 15 of their 20 living children without shelter. Two older boys are staying with a neighbor to care for the family's livestock. The parents and other children have temporary ac- commodations with two married daughters and a son in Fort Kent, Me. They saved a barn, shed, ga- rage for their 1961 car and a granary. Salvaged from the house were a bed, blankets and expensive electrical appliances given to Mr. Cyr after appear- ances on the Gary Moore tele- vision show following the births of the last three children. The barn houses two cows, a horse, hogs and poultry. FOUGHT TAX OFFICIALS Dark-complexioned and wiry, the French-speaking Mr. Cyr-- don't miss.. * CHECK YOUR TORONTO STAR AND -TELY FOR DOZENS OF EXTRA SPECIALS for POWER-FUL spring blind in one eye--considers the future of his large family hope- Jess without a home on their 300-acre farm. Seventy acres are under cultivation. He doesn't know where the rebuild- ing money will come from but hopes for permission to cut logs on Crown land for the lumber. The Cyrs had fought tax of- ficials for years to keep their ill-fated dwelling. In 1959 a pro- vincial constable charged as- sault, claiming Mrs. Cyr and some of her children beat him and tied him to a chair when he tried to serve a tax execu- tion. A magistrate dismissed the charges on grounds of rea- sonable doubt '"'due to the con- flicting evidence of the prose- cution." The home was put up for sale in December, 1959, for county tax arrears of about $600 but a settlement allowed cancellation of the outstanding taxes. CAMPAIGN RAISES FUNDS Another auction was sched- uled last June. The family bor- "gowe $680 and paid the tax ar- réeays. A} recent campaign in nearby Edmundston to aid the Cyrs produced about $200, clothing and canned goods. A later cash collection was planned in St. Francois parish. Mr, Cyr is a stfong supporter of the Social Credit Party. A local party official said he would ask the Madawaska Mu- nicipal Council at its July meet- ing to exempt the Cyr family from all county taxes for 10 years. In Quebec, it was said, any family with 20 children or more is not required to pay property taxes. Machine Peels Fruit Using Infra-Red Heat By EDNA BLAKELY OTTAWA (CP) -- A machine that uses infra-red heat to peel apples, tomatoes, peaches and plums has been devised by Dr. E. A. M. Asselbergs, 35-year-old research scientist with the fed- eral agriculture department. The fruit is put on a belt that carries it through 3,000-degree infra-red heat. Apples are ex- posed for 25 to 30 seconds. To- matoes, plums and _ peaches move more quickly and are ex- posed for only four or five sec- onds. When the fruit is taken off the machine the skin peels as easily as that of a banana. A unit that would remove the peel mechanically is still being de- veloped. The machine is a boon to commercial firms. Skins re- moved with infra-red heat' are extremely thin. Thus there is little loss of weight, more food value is retained and the fruit "won't turn brown after it has been peeled. In addition to commercial use, | Dr. Asselbergs says he would) like to see a small household! unit "like a toaster" developed. | STARTED IN HOLLAND | He brought the project with) him when he came to Canada) 12 years ago, having started while attending Wageningen University in his native Hol- land. Last year Dr. Asselbergs dis- covered a method of making in- stant mashed potato crystals which has been adopted by some mrnufacturers, Means of producing flakes and granules) had been found earlier. Now he has come up with a variety of combination dried foods in which potato is mixed with fish, beef, pork, lamb, chicken or cheese. These can be reconstituted with milk or water. Dr. Asselbergs says that al- though the use of convenience foods is usually more economi- cal, particularly in institutions, there always will be plenty of foods that will come only in na- tural form.
