Millar, Deputy Minister, Department of Public Works, Ontario Russian People Have Obsessive War Fear EDITOR' NOTE---In this finai article of a five-part series, an American newspa- per man sums up some of his impressions after a three-week tour of Russia. By DON DEDERA Arizuia Republic Columnist Distributed By The Associated Press MOSCOW--For the many mis- conceptions that Americans and Russians hold about one an- other, the Russians can be more easily excused. "On, I hope that some day you become a_ millionaire!" gushed a guide as we said good- bye. It was the nicest wish she could conjure for a citizen of capitalism. "Twenty-five per cent of your citizens are unemployed," an- other Russian told us. "We read it in. your own newspapers." Which newspapers? "The Worker of New York. It has a circulation bigger than the New York Times, the Pravda of the U.S. government." We joined a tour group of about 20 persons in Moscow, and began to isolate some of our own false judgments about the Soviet Union. We learned, with some sur- prise: --The Russian people as in- dividuals have an obsessive fear of war. wanted to be liberated by us. We met none who --Having nothing with which to compare communism, and better off economically than they have ever 'been, many Russians consider communism the wave of the future. MORALS STRICT --Publicly, at least, Russian morals are puritanical. --Politics aside, they are pain. Baldwin, Chairman. J. 'B. Annand, General Manager. The Public Utilities Commission of the City of Oshawa 100 Simcoe Street South, Oshawa, Ontario fully proud people who believe in the destiny of their mother- land. | We also had taken to Russia the belief that the liberalization of the Soviet system has been considerable in recent years. "It's just not that much!" emphatically stated an Ameri- can who has lived for years in Moscow. "So what, if the poet Evtus- henko reads critical poetry to a crowd of students? Evtushenko 's devoted to communism. He never goes too far. And his game wins the Soviet Union a great propaganda victory in the Western press. "Meantime, there are 215,- 000,000 Soviets who never heard of Evtushenko." People are still being arrested for telling Khrushchey - farm jokes. Recalcitrant workers are still being shipped "voluntarily" to the virgin lands. Our friend took us to Aelita, the night club in Moscow that has been interpreted in the west as a significant. relaxation of the Soviet regime. It proved as exciting as a bowling alley bar. Moreover, we saw no sign that the Communist minority that rules the Soviet Union has softened its indoctrination at home, or lowered its goals for the world. IDOLIZE LENIN To a Westerner, the idoliza- tion of Lenin borders on ob- scenity. His picture is on every- thing; his bust in every corner; his statue in every town. Even his flesh, if that is what it is, is displayed in. that red marble mausoleum. And if we have any doubts about the evangelism of the re- ligion of communism, they were dispelled by one of its priest- esses, Nina. She took us to the Lenin mus. eum in the old interim Parlia- ment building off revolution square. Here the baby pictures, the hats and coats, the manu- scripts, the suitcases of Lenin are collected. There is even a motion picture, Lenin Alive! made of meticulously edited newsr2els of cinema's early days. The climax is a map of the world, nearly extending from ceiling to floor.
