For the first time since its incorporation 90 years ago, the village now has two banking es- tablishments, both providing a completely modern banking ser- vice. Last November, the Royal Bank of Canada set up tempor- ary premises in the former Do- minion Stores building on Queen street. Just recently, the Royal Bank's Port Perry branch was moved into permanent premises -- formerly occupied by the Emerson Insurance Agency. It's a.place where people from the metropolitan areas like to come for an afternoon in the sun, by the water; for a summer vacation; and where many met- ropolitan area workers, nearing retirement age like to build homes in which to spend their years in retirement. But more and more younger couples are finding this village an ideal place in which to live. Village building inspector Wal-: ter Sonley last year issued 39 residential building permits, totalling $212,025 in value. Twelve of last year's building permits issued were for new dwellings and the remainder were for alterations and addi- tions to existing village homes. J. F. Raines, Port Perry's clerk-treasurer says the average is 15 new homes being built in the village a year. But he points out, a peak building year in Port Perry may see as many as 29 or 30 new homes go up in the village. Seven commercial building permits, carrying a total value of $31,325 were issued by Mr. Sonley last year. One of these included a permit for the build- ing of a fine hall by Branch 419, Royal Canadian Legion, on Bay street. The new hall was officially Canadian Bank of Commerce established a Port Perry branch. That bank is still in the village and until last November was the only bank operating there.
