THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, July 31, 1962 19-Suite Motel On 2nd Storey The Emmerson Motel in Port Perry is possibly the only one of its kind in Canada. This unique 19-suite motel) was built seven years ago. It is"on the second floor of a Queen Sireet store block in the - heart of the village. Emmerson Motel features in- clude individually air condition- ed. units, central heating, free television in all suites, plus a large public TV lounge, effi- ciency apartments, nine in all, some of which are permanently rented and the others reserved for Port Perry vactioners) hotel rooms, plenty of free parking and reasonable rates. The motel is only a minute's walk from Lake Scugog. 'Harold W. Emmerson and his son, W. George Emmerson, co-owners of the eight-store business block the motel spans are insurance men, OVERNIGHT GUESTS Five years ago, while walking through the second storey of their block of stores, the idea came to the two Emmersons that Port Perry was without a place for overnight guests to stay. Mr. Emmerson Sr. says the second stérey space was "just being wasted anyway", so he and his son decided to build their motel. Officials of the Ontario De- partment of Travel and Pubii- city have said recently the Eni- merson Motel can be compared to many of the best hotels in Canada. When they started renovating the motel area, the Emmersons decided on installing a couple. of efficiency apartments. Al- most as soon as they were fin- ished they were rented -- per- manently. 'NINE APARTMENTS Then they decided to install! too were! two more -- these rented immediately. Now there are nine efficiency apartments, some of which are rented by the same tenants year after year for the winter months and are available to vacationers during the summer months. Every year Emmerson Motei | re- | gets commercial travelers' peat business. Some of these travelers come from as _ far away as southern parts of the United States, stay at the Em- merson and drive from there to the metropolitan centres in which they do their business. Hostess Mrs. Allan Suggitt keeps the place spotlessly clean.
