Entomologists from the fed- eral forestry department here conducted an insecticide spray- jing program in the Lens Creek area of the Cowichan district. They hoped a new deadly poison known as thiodan would kill the beetles which plague British Columbia logging opera- tions and inflict an annual dam- jage of $3,000,000. Results of the spraying pro- gram show the ambrosias have suffered no ill effects. The en- tomolorists are baffled and say ,all they can do now is "scratch four heads a little longer' be- fore planning their next move. The success medical research- ers are having in the fight against the sniffles and other |diseases caused by respiratory viruses including influenza and pneumonia will be the subject of study at the eighth Inter- national Congress for Micro- biology in Montreal Aug. 19-25. Some 2,000 delegates from 43 countries, including the Soviet Union, will attend the congress organized by the Canadian So- ciety of Microbiologists. Medical scientists in many parts of the world have been searching to find a vaccine for the common cold. One of the most active is a team at the Harvard Hospital at Salisbury, England, After vears of research, it claims to have found viruses which cause colds, and to have produced a vaccine which will protect man jagainst a fair proportion of these viruses. Reports on the team's work, jincluding the use in man of its Inew "cold' vaccine, will be made at the congress. y VANCOUVER (CP) -- W.
